CGAS appointment

When DS made the arrangements he didn't pay for it, it's on orders. The reservation was also just tentative and they don't confirm it until right before the date. You get to fly a day earlier only if you live outside the continental U.S.. I believe that you must be in Leamy Hall on the morning of the 17th.

We flew out on a Saturday before the report day. No way could we have flew in on the same day. DDs report time was the first slot. I would make sure you arrive as early in the day as possible the day before. Summer travel to the east coast with a connecting flight or a stop over in the south can be just as bad as going there during the winter with a connecting flight in Denver or Chicago.

Oh yes, you're right. We didn't pay fot it either, so it wouldn't t be reimbursement. We're just wondering if the Saturday flight tentative reservation was ok as opposed to Sunday.

So, is your DS flying on Sunday then?

We have the earliest reporting time slot also, and our early morning flight doesn't arrive until evening. We didn't feel safe doing that on Sunday either, so we decided to fly early Saturday, getting there Saturday night. We just got nervous because of an email we received saying our travel day is Sunday. Wasn't sure if we MUST fly on Sunday to have DD's ticket paid for, or if their main concern is the lodging reimbursement for Sunday night only.

Hmm. Double check with CGA. The wording in the email would make me wonder too. I believe you are correct and Alaskan is also correct. Out of the continental travelers have 2 days worth of reimbursement while stateside cadet candidates have just 1. I believe this is all part of lodging.

He's leaving on Saturday since we live outside the continental U.S., arriving in Providence on the morning of the 16th and Amtrak to New London.

Anyone heard anything from your kiddos yet? Any letters? Nothing here, and we've written four letters already. No news is good news I guess...???

They will be super busy......I expect to hear in a few weeks when they get ready to travel and the phones are returned.

Thought I would post in this topic to keep the info current for new families who have appointees to CGAS. Our DD was offered a CGAS appointment from EA. There are two interesting updates to the CGAS program for this year:

1. The CGA contact for CGAS is now Lt. Marvi Rivera
2. The decision deadline for EA applicants to accept/decline their offer of CGAS appointment is now 1 May 2018

For those families with current scholars in the program - can you offer up specifics about the experience at GMC (and MMI / NAPS as well) this year (classes taken/work load, number of CGAS cadets, schedule (academic/athletic/other), access to academic resources, free time/leave, financial position/need for money, personal vehicle access, sports commitment, etc.).

Our DD is recruited for women's soccer and I noticed that GMC is the only CGAS school that offers that particular sport...I realize that is still no guarantee that she will be placed at GMC, but my guess is that it would be weighed when making a placement decision. We appreciate any insight you are willing to share.

DS is attending MMI. He attended the summer orientation at USCGA with the rest of his class and then the scholars were sent out to the three prep schools. The academic work is like another year of high school with pre- calculus, Chemistry , Physics and English as the main course. There is plenty of free time at MMI, weekends are free most of the time and certain evenings during the week. Cadets have vehicles and go and do things off campus regularly. There were close to 80 CGAS participants to begin the year, 35 or so were sent to MMI. They get paid decent and he has spending cash. Athletics and various clubs are available. DS got scuba certified this fall with the scuba club. The main goal is to focus academically for most cadets however. DS had a roommate that was a recruited swimmer and MMI has no swim team. So they stay fit and focus on staying healthy!

DS was a recruited athlete for football and track he was sent to NAPS. The Scholars that were being sent to NAPS left the CGA about two weeks earlier than the rest of the Scholars so they could start indoc at the same time as the rest of the NAPsters. NAPs is quite a bit different than the other two prep schools. They are living on a active naval base. There regiment is very strict and controlled. Very little free time. The classes are the same as mentioned above but they are academically tested during and place in basic, intermediate or advanced levels. My son was a very good student in High School and has found the naps classes difficult. They received a nice size paycheck for an 18 year old with no expenses, no need to supplement or provide any additional spending money. My DS has actually saved quite a bit of his.
