VMI Packing List

Are we supposed to have just a duffle bag or something? I'm looking, but I can't find anything helpful. The New Cadet Handbook says that we need a "lock box". Is that any different, if so how large is it supposed to be?

The New Cadet Handbook has the dimensions of the suitcase they recommend you bring. You may also bring a duffel bag that can be stored in the suitcase after the suitcase and duffle are empty.

The lockbox is different, that is a small box that you can use to store any prescription meds. It is not required, but is optional.

Thank you so much!

Yes, exactly what EODSEALMOM said. You can have other duffle bags they just need to fit into the larger (make sure it is not bigger than the size in the handbook says) suitcase once all are emptied.

They will have lock boxes for sale at the Matriculation fair. My son got his at Walmart, it was a small cash box he just took the money tray out. He keeps his prescription meds in there, his wallet, not sure what else.

Do your best to stick exactly to the list. You want to have what you need and not stick out like a sore thumb.

My DS is gathering his items for matriculation for the fall. I suggested he put his last name on his stuff, just to keep track of it, but he said that will make him stand out and he doesn't want to draw any attention to himself. Any comments? Is a small label with your name on stuff a good or bad idea?

Don't label it. They will do this with Cadre when they get there. Definitely don't label. They do it in a very specific way.

Best of luck and if you are not on the Facebook rat parent page search for VMI rat mass 2018+3 parent under groups and watch messenger for contact from an admin.

Do not label anything. They have a specific way for it to be done and Cadre will show them how to do it.

I recommend joining the rat parent page on Facebook if you haven't already.

Any electrical and computer engineering students will not be able to use the laptops recommended by VMI. They don't have enough power to run the software that they will be required to have. You can discuss with computer stores the fact that the computer will be required to run CAD programs such as AutoCAD and Solid Works. You could probably get by the RAT year, but anything past that won't work if he still is in the major.

This!!! My son is CE major and we specifically upgraded the computer we bought him so he would be able to run CAD and we would not have to upgrade after rat year.

With only 10 days until Matriculation, are there any "little things" anything that cadets (current or previous) found would've been nice to have? And what type of watch should I get? I know of people getting G-Schocks, but other people are getting/using Fitbits. Any recommendations?

My advice would be to think about those "little things" later, maybe have something sent once the academic year starts and you have a better handle on things or even wait until parents weekend. For now, enjoy your last 10 days before Matriculation, stay in shape.

The only little things I can think of would be cold medicine and a multivitamin. As for the watch I think my son originally had the G Shock and now has a Garmin GPS running watch. As long as it is black, tells time and is durable you should be good.

Cello?

Will a musical instrument be confiscated as contraband?

If you’re not in band company it may be confiscated during hell week because the cadre for companies other than band will just be confused why you brought an instrument for hell week. You’d get it back though.

If you’re not in band, just leave it in your trunk (or bag, since i’ve heard you guys can’t have trunks?) for hell week. After that, put it in shell hall. If you play it in your room, you’ll garner unwanted attention.

Oh, I definitely was not planning on playing in the barracks hahaha XD
