Waiver Needed Before School

Also to anyone that knows, my DODMERB tech gave me a number to call about BUMED and he said to wait until they get my records before they can start the process. How will I know the process has started? Will that be when my status changes to under waiver consideration? Thank you!

Also, if I am not able to get the waiver. I've seen more than one person say something like "what got a waiver last year may not this year" so if I don't this year is it possible to try another route and get it?

My DD is in a similar situation. Medically DQ on May 3, 2017 and status on DoDMERB still says Pending Waiver Submission/Review from AROTC. There has been no contact with her regarding any further information required. She is set to go to a private college in the Fall but can not financially afford to do so if the waiver is denied. She was so excited and honored to be selected for the 3 year AD scholarship but now is concerned about her options in the Fall. The waiting is the worst...

Whatever you do, make sure you do it with the okay of your chain of command.

All other posters are accurate regarding the import of contacting your unit. You may expect to have to get the medical paperwork that college programmers use filled out as well, just so your unit can be sure you're fit to train. Look back through your unit's Welcome Aboard package, my guess is it's included in there just in case.

Obviously every unit is different, so they may advise you down a different course, but it can't hurt knowing the appointments you might need to make!

You don't really know what to do. The best plan I can honestly think of is to take a loan out before hand and if I don't receive a waiver to finish the semester and transfer to the state college after. The only problem is, that sounds horrible.

Agree it is highly unpalatable, but it is important that you hope for the best but plan for the worst. In all of life, you will need to confront the realities of the worst case scenario, and then do everything in your power to make the best case scenario happen.

You should also contact the college Financial Aid Department and advise them of the possibility of your waiver being denied. They might find additional contingent aid for you, such as work/study, grants etc. Sometimes they make offers to college candidates that end up attending elsewhere. That money might be available to you.

Agreed. Loans have been secured but with hesitation as one semester at the private college will cost around $25,000. She has reached out to both organizations inquiring about her waiver and has even put in a transfer request to the State college she was accepted to...no response as of yet on either. Did I mention that the waiting was the worst? Thanks for your insight.

If you haven't yet check with the school about the last day you can withdraw. We found out I can withdraw sometime in September which is well after the "6-8 week" approximate timeframe BUMED gave me. I figured if I can't afford to go to this college I may as well take a gap semester and go to my in-state option in the spring. I know this isn't always an option but it's worth a look.

We are in the exact situation for my DD whose going to Norwich this Fall. She has 2 conditions that she was DQd for that have us pretty much in the mind set it wont happen. With two children in college this Fall we can't really afford it but we are going to stay the course since that's her choice and it's a great school.

We are in tough situation right now because Norwich ask all Scholarship winners to be there a couple of days earlier for a banquet and a few other events. For some reason the admissions counselor is in the mind set she should know if she got the waiver by then (18 Aug) which I highly doubt after reading how long others here have taken..

We were looking to see if a Representative could help speed it up and they seemed pretty open to it I just don't know if it could hurt my chances to get approved.

My DS is in the same situation, awarded a 4 year ROTC Scholarship but now needs a waiver. When you say you are looking to see if a Representative could help speed it up, do you mean a Congressman?

I would really caution anyone against involving a MOC or his/her staff with the DoDMERB process as that is NOT their expertise.
