Are Remedials the norm?

Our DS had his optometric exam in late July and his medical exam on Aug 1. The medical exam was a real surface skimmer - only took 20 mins, very brief, and everything seemed okay to my DS. Nothing seemed to be out of sorts. No labwork (blood) was ordered, just a pee test. His medical history is pretty clear - no ongoing health issues, just eyeglasses and typical baby/toddler colds and flus. Today we see that a Remedial is being requested. Is it normal for a Remedial to be requested for a generally healthy young man with hardly any medical history events to speak of? Also, is it normal for DoDMERB to declare somebody military qualified without running any blood tests?

No blood tests. With my knee issue last year, I got remedial before I was DQ'd so I think they just need more information before they can make an accurate decision on whether to qualify/ disqualify your son for whatever the remedial code states. There are pages and pages of things listed on DODMERB that your DS could be DQ'd for, but seeing he has no serious issues I think everything will be okay if he sends the paperwork they ask for. Hope this helps!

you will get a code and letter explaining what the remedial is for and what additional records DoDMBERB would like - there must have been something on his application that triggered this response - maybe mention of a food or medication allergy? Keep checking and you will find out soon what it is and can address it.

Thank you, brob. Will the information be supplied to us on the website, by email, or by snail mail? I ask because we are going out of town for a couple of weeks and won't be around to receive snail mail.

They will post it to the website.

Remedials aren't the norm, but they are not uncommon. If your son had a broke foot for example, they may ask for clarification that everything has healed perfectly (this is what happened to my daughter). Answer the question clearly and concisely and if your attending doctor signed off and said all is well - it is very likely DoDMERB will 'pass' you.

They are no reason to get stressed over. The medical information provided raised a flag that requires one more step.

It might already be there and you may not have noticed it - my daughter's remedial notice AND the letter were posted on same day - you have to look in the menu on left side and click on correspondence

Oh, wow, thanks for mentioning that detail. I would never have checked that. However, as of now it still says "There is no information at this time." I'll keep looking. Thanks. Funny thing is that his medical history has been so clear of events, not even allergies. He has been such an amazingly healthy kid through the years. So the only thing I can imagine triggering it is something they discovered in the exams. I am hoping for no big surprises. o_O

I also hope it is nothing serious. Have you read through the medical standards just to see if you can predict what it might be?

best wishes - let us know what you find out - there is a lot of help here on this forum

Hey, good news - we're good to go. Apparently the remedial was administrative. It is resolved and DS is Qualified status. I am impressed how quickly the process went (and thankful). Thanks, everybody, and good luck!

It appears that the doctor's submittal was incomplete. They reviewed an exam again today, and then issued the DD:2368 status letter. So happy to have this behind us!

Our DD's status changed to Remedial Requested yesterday (no codes or letter). She's been very healthy, so no problems were anticipated. I sent an email to the address on the DoD site yesterday. A reply came today stating that we would get a letter within the week with details about what was needed. I happened to check the portal later and there was a letter that said that she was qualified. Not sure if the standard process is to always show Remedial Requested before the result?

No, remedial requested is not part of the standard process - perhaps the question was answered via another review of records. There is probably no way to tell what happened, but if the portal says Qualified, that's all you need to know! Good news.

All remedials will get a letter with specific code and instructions.

Ex: DS` urine test showed glucose, triggered blood test for hemoglobin.
Retest was negative, strictly routine.

Could be anything, don't sweat remedial until you get specifics.

So we are busily sending in information for the remedials, but I'm curious if anyone else received a remedial stating "...visual acuity not correctable to 20/20..." DS wears contacts for distance, but his eyes are not that bad; in fact, I took him to the optometrist for his yearly and asked about his visual acuity. She stated his eyesight is completely correctable to 20/20, if not 20/15. DS said at DoDMERB optical exam they didn't test him with his glasses at all. I'm afraid this disqualifying condition will prevent him from obtaining a waiver. Any thoughts?

Also, any experience with disqualifying condition following a broken foot? DS broke his 5th metatarsal at an academy summer seminar and it healed fine. Very little restrictions even post break - still played baseball, participated in Boys State and other summer seminars. Hardly ever used his boot as there was no pain and doctor said use it for pain, but other than that he was good to go. 6 week follow up showed the break healed, but it could heal in two ways - together or separate. His healed as two separate bones and we sent all doctor information to DoDMERB. Now he has a disqualifying condition - orthopedic. I'm hoping this is normal following a break, but it's frustrating!

My DD has just gotten the same - Remedial Requested, but no code listed in the portal. I guess she just waits and sees! [emoji41] [emoji572]

Our DD had a similar experience. Apparently the medical exam submitted by the doctor was missing some information. It only took one day to be corrected and change from Remedial Requested to qualified.
