Anyone reapplying or have kids reapplying to USAFA? Son applied to 2021 and is reapplying for 2022. Son is working on his new application. He's noticed there are some changes from last year's application.

Im not sure what the process was for the class of 2021.
My daughter is a member of the class of 2020 and my son is a candidate for the class of 2022. Yes, some changes have been made (since the class of 2020 applied). I believe the ALO interview process is the biggest change with having an on-line interview conducted by an out of area ALO.

Yes, reapplying. Not too much is different except I'm less stressed and more optimistic, hopefully the same for everyone else.

Son is a little more stressed completing application. He's a little worried with references. We live in an area heavily affected by the hurricane. Many of his references have flooded homes and lost everything. He feels it's just not appropriate to be pestering them for references (especially when many of them already did them last year.)

He's on an AFROTC Scholarship and trying to determine the best time to talk to his commanding officer. He's hasn't told anyone he's reapplying. It'd be bad form to show up first week at A&M in the Corps and let them know you're applying somewhere else.

So it's a different kind of stress with his application this time.

There is no rush to tell his unit at A&M. The academy will not review his file until they receive first semester grades. My DD approached the subject with her unit in early November last year after she had participated and shown her ability in ROTC.

The nomination packets will be tough with letters but I do not see a way around it. You could reach out to the MOC and see if they are making any changes to the process based on the storm.

His usafa app is due in November. With the whole corps dynamic and fish/upperclassman relationship is a factor. He needs to get his fitness assessment completed and with Corps obligations theres very little free time. He doesn't want to wait too long. Good news is he has already maxed out the AFROTC fitness test and will be getting a ribbon for uniform.

Reference letters he thought he was ahead of the game because he requested them earlier this summer. Well now some congressman/USAFA are requesting additional references all be submitted online through an access code. He's having to go back to some references and request they do it again.

It will work out. He's doing well in engineering honors program (first sets of tests and quizzes were As) and is doing well in his unit, enjoying participating in special tactic squadron workouts. These seem like great additions to his already pretty strong application. Just need to meet deadlines and get those application forms submitted. :)

I would suggest having him reach out to the officer in charge of admissions for his area and ask how do they really handle re-applicants in college. The deadline for the application may be early but I cannot imagine they will board him without seeing his first semester grades. Nominations would also be in that same category. There is no way all MOCs have their nomination slates in by November. He will have to get everything else submitted by the deadline I am sure.

DS is a reapplicant - He did get a new ALO and he has been very helpful. Has anyone else been assigned a new one?

I learned today that I can't go request my son's high school transcripts for congressional noms and usafa app. (He's 18 now!) I was trying to help him out and take care of a couple minor things since he is away at college.

So, he is printing out and mailing in a request form with his signature.

Best wishes to all!

I'm a re-applicant this year too. Being in college does make it more stressful as you are trying to also stay on top of school work. Does anyone have a suggestion on the best way to getting an AFROTC nomination?

I have some unique insight in that I have a Junior in the Corps at A&M and a C4C at the Academy. My junior had a friend who was a fish with her at A&M and reapplied to the Academy their freshman year and was accepted (now a C3C). I know there are some staff officers at the Trigon who have some experience with this. I'm not sure about the COs, they probably don't know much but you never know. If you want to PM me I may be able to help you some, or point you in the right direction.

Also, there may be a nomination route through the ROTC program there at A&M so it might be worth asking some questions earlier rather than later. On a side note, when my DS was applying to the Academy he had an acceptance at A&M and AROTC scholarship. The folks over at the Trigon were very supportive.

Does it affect your re-application negatively if you previously turned down an appointment?
It positively doesn't help much. It definitely won't hurt for you to make sure to explain yourself pretty well - need to prove your sincerity, credibility, and integrity. Who knows!? There may be mercy. Good luck!

Its actually an odd situation. I received the TWE the end of April, 2017. I held out hope for a late appointment but never got one. So, I committed to plan B at a 4 year university on a scholarship. Around July 10th, I received a phone call from USAFA asking if I was still interested in an appointment and that I had to make a decision right then on the phone. At that point, I had already made several commitments and given zero time to consider it, I turned it down. I certainly didn't expect that phone call and felt at that very moment, I made the best decision I could.

July 10 - after BCT had already started?

Assuming you posted the wrong date - USAFA will be fine with you re-applying and they would not look unfavorably upon your application. Explain that you were indeed offered a very late appointment, but the window for acceptance they provided was not adequate enough for you to consider all the options. Frankly, that is a mature, rational response.

Do well in class this semester.

In that case, push forward and reapply.

No, not the wrong date. I thought it was very odd since I knew "I" day was June 29th. The caller ID on my phone said "colorado springs". I had no reason to believe that it wasn't a genuine offer. I searched this forum for anyone that had a similar experience but couldn't find anything. Being 2 weeks behind everyone else really didn't appeal to me either!! Honestly, had they given me more time to make a decision, I may have made a different choice. I asked if I could call them back and the person on the phone said "no, we need a decision now or we will call someone else". I am re-applying but I also am confident I made the right decision for me at that time. I take commitments that I make to myself and others very seriously and if I am asked about this, I can confidently justify my reasons for the decision I made.
