It says academically qualified but waiting on 7th semester grades and nomination
I’m confused - is this basically a waiting list?

Nearly all qualified candidates are placed on hold, some briefly, some for months. Congratulations for making it this far! The waiting is agonizing, I know. Keep working until your application is 100% complete including 7th semester grades and nomination. Also keep updating with any new honors you receive.

1) It means they got your stuff but it's way to soon for any decision.
2) You need a nomination from Congressman/Senator and your 7th semester grades.
3) It does mean you are ahead of the curve as far a preparation though.

Realistically, you probably won't get a confirmation until April 2018 once all your data is processed.

Good luck!

My son received his nomination in late May, after being on hold for months. He had actually already registered for another school (May 1st cutoff for most). Most acceptance letters go out in April, then another wave when candidates decline an appointment, leaving additional spots for qualified candidates. It's a long wait, but if you are one of the fortunate 280, it's well worth it!
