I get infantry, but what is it about field artillery? It definitely needs it's own emoji; something that goes like this!

You have to love how Chem Corps doesn’t start until the 400s....

These are correct except MS is Medical Service, not Medical Corps. May seem like something small, but they are two separate branches (both exist). Also OD is just Ordnance.

As in why do so many people branch FA?

On a separate note, and stirring the pot, but still not sure why Air Defenders call themselves artillery....

Yes, I was just wondering why is it so popular.

Legacy: Air defense artillery used to be flak guns, not much difference than any other artillery.
Army is slow to adapt to change . . .;)

Note the aviation insignia is still a prop, throwback to days of pre-USAF Army Air Corps.

And for combat arms branch options artillery crews are usually miles behind the front lines . . .

But they do call it the Queen of battle for good reason.

Is this the total of all AROTC cadets that will commission in 2018?

I believe that is just West Point... I was wondering where we would find ROTC branch details. I have been searching but haven't found it yet.
Anybody know where that would be found?

The Army personnel folks decide on the numbers for each branch and cadets are allocated based on "the needs of the Army." FA and IN take big chunks of each class. Every cadet ranks every branch 1-17 (female cadets rank them 1-15 UNLESS they opt in to be considered for AR and IN, and then they rank them 1-17). Last year, many who ranked FA at the bottom ended up in FA because the Army needed more slots filled.

Or not as a battery commander I lost 2 Soldiers in Afghanistan to enemy action and my battalion had 100 Purple Hearts.

Forward Observers are embedded in every infantry and armor organization. Read the story of SFC Monti or SSG Pitts.

Hmmm - many FA cadets from last were placed into Styker Brigade Combat Teams with Infantry Divisions. Thinking they are a whole lot closer.

Read the Wikipedia post of the US Field Artillery Branch & it was very interesting. Didn't know we had coastal batteries until 1950. BTW: Happy 242nd Anniversary (yesterday) to the branch established 17 November 1775.

In the past FA and EN were more popular. A couple years ago I took a casual look at the branches of LT's killed in GWOT - a lot more FA than I would have guessed.

Ugh - as the mom of a grad in an FA Stryker BCT unit expected to deploy .... let me go crawl under my covers and have time pass quickly.
