Is the math SAT/ACT weighted more heavily than the English?

I know some of the academies will scrutinize math scores far more than English scores. Is this true for the Coast Guard as well? My English ACT is strong at 35 but my math puts me at about average at 29. I'm retaking it twice before the end of the year and will hopefully be able to bring it up, although being a college applicant, I focus a lot more time on my classes as I know my first semester transcript will be closely examined. I'm also from a well represented area so from what I understand I need to submit a packet that's higher than the average that's generally accepted. What I wonder is how much I should be concerned with regards to the ACT. Does a 29 in math significantly hurt me?

I suggest you contact Admissions. Although I have never interacted with USCG Admissions , will assume that they have counselors who can offer guidance into making your packet as strong as possible. Good Luck!!

As far as I know, they look at more closely if you are doing a math/science major, but contact your admissions officer for more information.

Regardless of the answer, exactly what will you do differently? Better to focus your time/energy on things you can control.

The ACTs I'm taking are both in exam weeks so depending on the answer I'll know how much time to spend studying for it over my other classes.

Standardized tests like ACT/SAT primarily test you knowledge gained all throughout high school. You don't study for them as you would a typical h.s. test.

Thanks everyone for your tips. I got my score today and I brought my math up to a 33! I'm definitely feeling a little better about my application now. I may not even do another retake at this point.

This is how your English and Math will be equalized to SAT: V800, M760. 1560. Good job on your retake. Be sure your Writing is strong, anything 9 and above will put you in 95%-99% in Writing. I hope you applied Early Action. If your remaining packaging is superior, you should get an Appointment.

Thank you. I wasn't aware that they require the essay part, but I do have another score with a 21 that I could send in. I am applying from college, so I did not apply EA. Because of this I wonder how much the scores are actually considered compared to my fall transcript.

As far as I know, writing is required when submitting ACT scores but not SAT.The choice is obviously yours

I mean, it isn't my choice if it's required! I know what you mean.

It looks like the way the essay is scored has changed since I last took the test with the essay part. A 21 is equivalent an 8 today. Maybe not so high compared to the rest of the exam but not low either. I'll have to send that score report.
