Current M/C at Naval Academy Preparatory School happy to answer any questions!

, I'm curious as to whether or not NAPS is exclusively for those with low scholastic qualification.

For the most part, NAPS existst to assist in academic preparation. There could, of course, be exceptions... but I have never heard of anyone going for CFA.

I am currently attending NAPS with the class of 2018. I know while I was applying and when I got accepted to NAPS I had a lot of questions no one seemed to be able to answer. There's also a lack of information about NAPS on the web. So if you have any questions I'm happy to answer them!
Where is the Prep School for USNA?

My sons SAT was a 730Math and a 620 in Verbal. Being there is such a discrepency does he look like a Prep School Candidate or is the 620 ok for USNA do you think? Also, what is the Liberty schedule on the weekends like? Can you only leave on Saturdays for 12 hours like USNA?

None of us can really gauge if your DS will be qualified or not. Admissions looks at so many factors to make that call. NAPS has a lot more liberty than a Plebe at USNA, but that schedule can vary depending on athletics, being sat in grades, duty, etc.

Hello my DS is applying to USNA and heard that the midshipmen get a lot of slack from the detailers for attending NAPS. Did you find the to be true?

heard that the midshipmen get a lot of slack from the detailers for attending NAPS.

What do you mean, get a lot of "slack."? If you are suggesting that Plebe Summer is easier, it is to some degree... the NAPSTER has a year experience, knows what to expect, and isn't starting from Ground Zero. That doesn't necessarily mean the NAPSTER has it easier or the Detailers cut them slack ; in fact one could say its harder, because the expectations are higher , and the NAPSTER is expected to assist his/her classmates when they struggle.

I meant to say they are looked down upon because they went to prep school. Not sure if that is true. The is just what we heard.

This bit of hearsay about prepsters has left me slack-jawed in surprise. In and of themselves, NAPSters and other prepsters are well prepared to excel at USNA, and the NAPSters in particular are generally prized as particularly helpful and savvy classmates. I have never heard the many NAPS/prep mids we have sponsored over the last 20+ years mention they were given any flack, much less cut any slack, because of their route to an appointment.

I can see, individually, if someone was a jerk in some way, and happened to come out of the prep pipeline. Or if someone had a thing about recruited athletes and associated that disdain with the prep path.

I have heard parents whose child didn’t get in on the first try, and not offered prep, comment passive-aggressively with a negative flavor about those offered prep. I just discount that as an inability to see the big picture and ceding to the SA it knows what it wants with regard to building a class.

This bit of hearsay - I would be saddened to hear a current mid thought that way about a group.

NAPSters for the overwhelming majority are just fine. They do have a leg up to start plebe summer and they are expected to help out the direct admits. They are pushed by the detailers to be leaders amongst their peers just like priors are. They usually have a leg up most of the summer as they know what to expect and spent a year in a military lifestyle, have home sickness out of their system and get in the groove quickly. Honestly by week 4 of the ac year you can’t tell a NAPSter from any other Mid. There are a few NAPSters every year that can’t seem to break out of the NAPS mode. They tend to live in the past of that year and some act superior to their classmates. Like I said, this is a a very small percentage. Just like no one cares that Johnny was homecoming king, no one cares what they did at NAPS. Those who act arrogant like Plebe Year is beneath them because they went to NAPS or they are better is just false. It is tiny percentage, but like in a lot of things... one bad apple seems to always be what people remember. Not trying to stir the pot or say NAPSters are bad. I have tons of friends who went to NAPS and am a fan of NAPS. It’s just what is thought of behind the current, or at least it was when I was there.

Thanks Capt MJ, not only am I surprised but I am also annoyed by this. My DS has met many prep schoolers on his numerous visits to USCGA including some from from NAPS and has always been impressed by them.

I really don’t understand why someone would say such a thing about a group of people. Like any group there are bound to be good, bad and indifferent amongst them. However my view is that anyone attending any of SAs must be inherently good no matter what route they went to get there.

My husband (32 yrs in the USMC) had served with a few former Napsters. They're excellent officers and friends. I do not think the negative labeling is constructive for anyone using this site.

Well .... I am a snob when it comes to musical instruments, especially the 88 ivories. And, I have a warm spot in my heart for anything Chopin that is played on it .... For the life of me, I cannot understand why any parent wouldn’t want their kid to master this beautiful instrument.

Our daughter, who is a NAPSter, has mastered this beautiful instrument, and she plays Chopin quite well. But she doesn’t want music to be her career. She has chosen a career in the Navy, and that is what she is doing. She is preparing for a career in the Navy, or Marine Corps. She mentioned a strong interest in one particular aspect of the Marine community to us while she was on break this past holiday. I don’t know much about these communities, but I support her in whatever she is interested in.

Anyway. Can your kid play this? I love it .... Enjoy

How many cadet candidates at NAPS? And is there as much drama there as USAFA Prep? My sister is at Prep and there’s A LOT of stuff going on there. She said it’s like attending a high school in a very small town.
Regarding cadet candidates from CGA. It depends on the year. My year had a few per company. Drama depends on your class. I can say there were people who perpetuated drama and others who didn’t. Everyone knows your business and news travels fast, so do your best and don’t give people reasons to question your integrity.
