Dates parents Attend

According to National Parents Association conference call last week, they want to have parents weekend when there is a home football game. Labor Day weekend has no football and the following weekend has no football. The next weekend with a home football game is homecoming weekend and they were not sure if they wanted to combine the two events. They said a decision on dates would be announced soon.
 
Welcome to KP. Lesson one. Never ever believe that the calendar will ever be what the administration or the calendar says it will be. Always be ready to pay the change fee. Always have a way to cancel the hotel. Its the KP way............unfortunately
 
LOL well thanks for the heads up! I just booked 2 Airbnb places for 2 different weekends and wouldn't it be funny if it didn't end up even being one of those two weekends?!
 
End of September seems late for parents weekend but who knows, and I would lean toward the comment that they probably won't be combined as parents and homecoming weekends at the same time would cause the campus to be very busy, and activities geared towards different groups. Looking at some alternatives for joriebelle, even if parents weekend is not labor Day, there will likely be an overnight leave for the plebes on at least of one of those evenings and possibly even two so certainly good to go visit. If the parents weekend and acceptance weekend share a weekend, ( I haven't heard anyone say they are planning on going back to having separate acceptance and parents weekends)but not on the holiday weekend, the overnight would probably be limited to one night. Either way, even if you go up multiple times, you can still come onto campus and see your plebe, even if they cannot leave. I brought pizza into land hall a number of times plebe year just to provide a break, provide support, be a sounding board, etc.
 
Keep in mind that for those who live far away, and are not independently wealthy, a visit costs thousands of dollars and multiple visits may not be possible. We are constantly frustrated by not being able to make plans as we watch airfares go up and up while waiting for the administration to make decisions on things like the timing of Parents Weekend and spring break. Thank you for the opportunity to vent.
 
Yep, us too. We live in Illinois and I have 4 other children who would like to come up too so we need to drive and not fly. It's not cheap. I hope they figure it out soon so we can make some plans. I understand the problem they are having though.

trying to think back to plebe year. We attended acceptance, parents, a home rugby match, USCG rugby match, and I made it up for a couple more on my own, as well as a couple of "drive by's" as I was up on the east coast for work. All of those were set dates that didn't change. But, trimester leave, changed after tickets bought, change fee incurred. Thanksgiving break-changed--change fee; Christmas--I think changed to a later day to return, change fee; spring break--I think changed because of the formal dance or was that end of year? so many change fees I forget, so change fee--oh, and bought a formal choker since the school ran out of them. and bought the high gloss black shoes since the school didn't have them. had the winter blues tailored correctly over Christmas, hmm--what else. I know there is more. So, yes, as kpmom says, there are hidden costs in attending KP. Sea year is another one-clothes, boots, equipment, flights to and from ros ships etc. so, kpmom--vent accepted!! and understood!!
 
Golfindad, don't tell me that LOL! So how much IS a change fee to change your tickets?
 
Depends on airline. I am a united guy. Change fee $200. Don't know what the others are
 
Speaking of "change fees", bear in mind that your plebe may have watch that weekend. In the past, the administration has "secured the watch" (watches cancelled) on Parents Weekend, but not so last September. I know this because my DS had two watches over Parents Weekend and wasn't able to get away except for a quick overnight in the hotel (back on watch at 0600). One option is to pay someone to take your watch. It's perfectly legal and some enterprising mids will make a tidy sum of money that weekend.

For that very reason my folks never came out (from California) while I attended. Weather can also put the screws to any plans.

For the Class of 2021 it was from Friday to Monday Labor Day weekend.

If the same as last year... Friday to Monday- what time did it start on Friday-- as do we need to fly up on Thursday night? and what time did it end on Monday? (I do realize date is not set..)
 
if it is Friday to Monday, based on past years, there would be events on Friday. This is the schedule for friday for 2016. Colors, visit classes, there may have been some informational meetings on Friday. Friday night would probably be a night plebes do not leave campus. Saturday has colors, parade, pinning and maybe a football game or something . upload_2018-1-29_8-6-15.png
 
In 2017 Parents weekend was Labor Day and Opening Game for Football. The following weekend was Homecoming. They had 2 games home back to back. Because the schedule this year 2018 now flips they are not sure what they are doing. Flipping meaning everyone they played home last year they now play away. Except for the Secretarial cup which is away for 2 years in a row and home for 2 years that is because of the contract with ESPN. Their first home game won't be until the end of Sept. I do believe this is why there is a delay in the schedule. Let's hang on and see what they can figure out.

Not to early to book. It is a fairly busy weekend in the area, notwithstanding KP visitors. There are a couple of hotels in Great Neck, but I can't talk to them as I haven't stayed at them. There is a HI Express in Roslyn, but it is typical of HI Express' these days, which seem to be just so-so. There are a number of places around LaGuardia. There are a number of places around Carle Place and Westbury. That is about 25 minutes from campus. A car is much more convenient to have, although Uber does serve all the areas. On a weekend like parents weekend, a car is probably cheaper if you intend on eating out, possibly going to the store to buy some contraband, etc.

For parents weekend, there will be a schedule issued. It will be up in the air until the week of or so. Your plebe will not know if he will have liberty or not. Your plebe will think he will not be able to leave. He will tell you he probably can't leave. You will get upset and say that is total BS. Mom will start to get upset and complain to hubby who will say, what do you want me to do about it......That will go on for a couple days, and then, like magic, liberty will come through because the plebes met some goal. They will likely be restricted to campus Friday. They will be required to attend the parade, acceptance, etc. and if there is a football game, that as well. There is usually a rugby match. There is probably a good likelihood that your plebe will be able to be off base Saturday and Sunday evenings, with a report time of somewhere around 4-5pm Monday. Mass and religious services are likely not to be held on campus because of the holiday and weekend so double check service times if you are thinking of attending Mass/Services on campus before you make plans.

Be warned, that your plebe may not want to run around NYC on the tourist train. Sleep may be in order, or, just eating at Fridays or BWW may be all they want. If there is a roommate, or buddy whose parents are not in town, you may want to think about the offer of letting your plebe bring a buddy with them if you have the room etc. or even just to dinner.

And, finally, when the plebe gets back to campus Monday, they will learn at pkt that they screwed up big time over the weekend, because either someone was seen out of uniform, someone didn't say hello properly, someone's white shoes had scuffs on them in Times Square :) and any benefits they had earned to date will be thrown out the window, and they will go back to step one.

We are in Arizona and we always book Southwest Airlines just for these very reasons. No change fees and if your plans change, you may not get a refund BUT you can bank the fare for a later trip. It is well worth perhaps not as great routing for these reasons. Oh, and two free checked bags (although my plebe has done just a small carry on up to this point.) Just a thought as KP, like all the academies, changes things constantly. :zip:
