End of the road for USNA?

If my son applied for USNA and USAFA, and only received a nomination to USAFA, its the end of the road for any hopes of attending USNA for this year, correct?

He has to have a Nom to attend and not having a MOC means he has few options (especially if not eligible for Pres or service connected). If he applied for a VP he could still be in the running, but chances are low, as there are only 5 that can be charged there. Also he could end up at NAPS or Foundation.

Ok, thank you. He did apply for the VP, but being a realist I don't think he would get it.

You confirmed what I was thinking, thank you.

My Colorado kid didn't get a nom for USAFA, nor did he get into their summer seminar last summer, but he did get SS and noms for USNA and USMA (USNA was top choice, thankfully) - perhaps geographical representation influenced that (?), but I believe it was more about what he listed as his top two choices. When he didn't get nom for USAFA, he closed his app for that institution and left the other two open. Will your DS choose to attend USAFA if the offer of appointment comes through?

Thank you, Yes he will definitely attend USAFA if appointed. He really liked the USNA campus and culture, but since he wants to be a pilot, his chances are better to fly at USAFA. So he listed his choices as USAFA #1, USNA #2. He got a second nom to USAFA from a senator but they told him they were giving it to someone else when he told them he already received one there.

Interestingly .... I was looking at the Academy Insider video blog the other day (somebody here mentioned it and I was checking it out over lunch), and the Blogger and his guest (a CAPT USN type) made the comment that USNA produces more pilots than USAFA. I found that strange ..

My son spent the night at USNA for the program they officer as well as the USAFA SS. Based on what he remembered being told, 1/3 of USNA grads become pilots, and at USAFA it was 1/2. We don't have any personal knowledge on it though.

In the "old days," if you qualified to be a pilot at USAFA, you were apparently guaranteed a slot. I've heard anecdotally that this is no longer the case. However, I'm not a USAFA expert by any means, so I'll leave it to one to correct me.

Back then, vision was the limiting factor. I still remember my BGO (who I took over from), explaining that USNA gave you a lot more opportunities like Surface, Subs and USMC if you went "blind" , i.e. less than 20/20. We didn't get the option of Lasik then.

BTW -- I try to avoid the term "old days" when referring to the 80's ! My daughters disagree.

That is weird, i hear the opposite. Anyone in USAFA who wants it and medically qualifies, gets it

Maybe they meant USN produces more pilots? Navy flight school in Pensacola trains Navy, Marine and Coast Guard pilots.
And I think the USNavy is still the worlds 2nd largest Air Force.
