Same School Candidates

My DS has three classmates at his school who are recruited USNA varsity athletes. They will all be appointed, although in one case, I believe, the student will attend NAPS for a year. My son is not a recruited Navy athlete. The school is private and my DS travels a half hour or so to attend each day, which I mention only because it happens that we are in a different congressional district from the other three, and also from one or two others who have applied (not sure if those latter two got appointments). My DS has an appointment from our Rep and was also fortunate enough to get one from one of our state's senators. The school, as I say, is private, all boys, and known for strong academics and and athletics. (DS is a two sport athlete and a captain of one team, even if not a recruited USNA athlete). The school has sent many to USNA in the past, especially varsity athletes.
Does being the potential "fourth" (or higher) candidate from the same school hurt his chances? Thanks
 
Not at all. Especially since he's in a different congressional district.
 
First, members of congress, the Vice President, and some others "nominate", while the Academy offers an appointment (acceptance). There are some ambiguities in your post because of this difference.

Anyway, if other candidates in your congressional district have already recieved offers of appointment, yes it is still possible for you to get an offer. You do not know what other nominating sources they have, let alone to what source their appointments will be "charged". That said if another candidate won your congressional slates (which you can't really tell), your odds of an appointment could be less because you'd now have to make it out of the national pool. But if the other candidates you mention are outside of your district, it doesn't matter. It's complicated but there are so many unknowns that it isn't worth stressing about. Try to be patient, and best of luck!

You can't assume someone being recruited will automatically get an appointment (or get sent to NAPS), process doesn't work that way. In addition, you have no idea if they might decide to attend a different school. Congressional district is what matters for your NOM's, school district has nothing to do with NOM's. Ten NOM's can be issued for each opening a MOC has.

You should focus on those things he can control and also work on your Plan B.

So don’t worry, also from this school 2 students went to USMA & one to USCGA. Total of 7 students;)
 
I agree. Your son is in a very fortunate situation to come from a non compete Congressional District. If coming from the same it can hurt. When I was in high school about 7 went to SAs - 2 to West Point 4 to USAFA and 1 to USNA from my class and I think it helped because many kids came from different Congressional Districts. 4 kids went to USAFA were in CAP.
 
This is so unreal for me. Nobody at my Sons school really even know about the Service Academies, let alone understand the process or what it would mean for him to get in.

Even though our school has ROTC, our school seems to be similar. We are on the outskirts of our congressional district, which does seem to be somewhat competitive. But hardly anyone from our school applies to service academies.
