Being 3Q?

Just remember that not all RCs will send a 3Q letter.
My DD was informed via email by RC that basing from her competitive nomination that she got a shot in USMA and RC will know more by the end of the month. RC also told her that he’s reviewing the file to send it for qualification... was told that it’s good togo. BTW, DD got a 4 yr ROTC scholarship already and also accepted to her first pick university and all her files are all complete (check free), DODMERB Qualified.
I’m curious what does this entail in terms of appointment. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I earned a 3-year AROTC scholarship and haven't accepted it yet. On the form it says you can't choose to attend another school including a service academy once you accept it so it's binding. Hopefully, I receive an appointment before the deadline for the scholarship so I don't have to worry about this.
You actually might check that information out on the ROTC forum. Many people will not have heard about their SA appointments before the deadline for accepting an ROTC scholarship. The scholarship should not actually be binding until you are contracted and ROTC knows that there is a high overlap of scholarship winners and SA applicants. The way it was explained to my DS almost four years ago now was that as soon as you accept your SA appointment, the ROTC scholarship offer is null and void.

DS is Class of 2020. He checked his portal on a Monday in Jan and there was nothing from his RC. On Tuesday he received the call from our Congressman notifying him of his appt. on Wed his 3Q letter appeared.

Now i know being 3q diaqualifies you from USMAPS. But if you're 3q and active military can you still be considered for USMAPS?

Not really, but in my opinion you are in a very good place at the moment. I do not want to falsely get your hopes up but you are competing against a pretty small number of qualified candidates on your nomination slate. They carve out spots for active duty soldiers and being qualified is a good step in the process.

Im just wicked eager to hear about a decision. Im pretty certain im more competitive than most

I just got notified that I was 3Q'd. But I don't know what the 3Q's are, could somebody help me, please?
I really wanted to answer with—-yes, we can tell you, but if you don’t know what it means they take away one of your q’s just for asking. Then I realized you’re probably as stressed as my DS is and you might not find that funny. I let a few more adult adults answer before telling you my joke. :)

I wish you would have said that I think it's hilarious. Hopefully your son gets good news soon!
Right back at you!

My DS received this letter from USMA when his medical waiver was initiated. His medical waiver was since approved on the 13th of Feb. Is this a round about way of saying he has the qualifications? He didn't get a 3Q letter yet, of course it has only been 5 days since his waiver was granted.

The Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DODMERB) has recently notified you that you have been medically disqualified for admission to the United States Military Academy (USMA). Because your candidate file indicates a solid record of accomplishment, we are requesting that the Surgeon, USMA, review your medical file for waiver consideration. You should be aware that only a small percentage of each incoming class may enter with a medical waiver. These waivers are not granted often and are reserved for candidates with extraordinary potential. USMA has a 90-day waiver processing time. Your immediate compliance with any request from USMA or the DODMERB is required. Failure to meet this deadline will result in the withdrawal of support for this waiver request. Should the Surgeon, USMA, indicate that your medical condition may be waived for admission and if you are qualified for admission in all other respects, you will be considered automatically for a waiver through an Admissions Committee review of your completed file. You should comply promptly with any instructions from the DODMERB.

ok i will admit to being new to the forum world. My DS has a nom to usma and usmma. He has his apps done but i am confused on what and how to define academically qualified.

You can absolutely accept the ROTC scholarship, and then choose to not attend. It is not a binding deal until you contract. If, for example, you get the appointment to USMA and choose to accept it, you simply notify the ROTC at the college, and inform them of your decision. Same applies should you choose to not seek a military commitment at all (no ROTC or SA)..........you advise the ROTC that you have changed your mind. Once you turn down the scholarship, though, I do not believe there is any way to change your mind again. You would have to reapply.

Go to his portal, sign in and if his liaison officer did a highly qualified letter, it will be there in PDF form. Usually they let you know via email that they done any addition to the portal.

For USMA the academic Q is determined by a review board based on coursework, test scores, etc. Exactly how that is determined is inside the "black box" that only admissions sees, but you can make an estimate by looking at the class profile or the old, but still useful, RAND report.

Unlike the medical Q which is determined by DodMerb and the physical Q determined by CFA test score, the academic Q is essentially a formal stamp of academic approval by the admissions committee.

Gotcha. He said he has nothing in his portal like that. Is the USMA different as far as interviews? USNA he had a blue and gold officer that came to the house and talked to him for about 90 min. Really liked him alot and seemed a little surprised he did not get a nomination to the usna. AFA did a skype interview. Nothing from the USMA.

Same here. No USMA interview, Skype for USAFA.

Is there a time of the month that "waves" go out? Looks like on the 2022 thread it picked up and then dropped off.

He seems pretty rounded compared to some posts i have seen. He has lettered in FB 2 years (1st team academic all state team and 2nd team ILB) , baseball 3 years (academic all district and 1st team). SB sec junior year. Beta club (honor society) vp senior year. Did well on cfa (6.12 mile, 14 pull ups/ 8.1 s/run/ 75 push ups and maxed out on situps (if memory serves).

@horsecountry You have asked a few questions let me see if I can give you the short version.

1. 3Q: You are evaluated by admissions to determine if you are qualified. Other posters are correct in that only your RC can tell you if you have been "deemed" qualified but an honest assessment will give you a pretty good idea. Does you DD meett he things listed in the class profile? If he has the grades, test scores and activities in the middle of the profile he will most likely be qualified. If one of the areas is way off, then you will not know unless your RC tells him. Some candidates will receive a 3Q letter while others may be qualified and not receive one.
2. Interviews: USMA does not require an interview as part of the application. A Field Force Rep may reach out to you but it really depends where you live and how many FFRs are available.
3. The first wave of offers are generally LOA holders and individuals with service connected nominations. The next big wave will happen after the application window closes and they start to evaluate MOC's slates.
