Room and Board

DS is a MSV and usually receives his in Dec. That's when he has received it for all 4 years. IDK if it will be different this year.

Can anyone tell me when the room and board part of the scholarship actually pay. We are in Florida and have Pre-paid tuition for the first 2 years, so my son opted to have the room and board scholarship. He has already started to receive his stipend and book allowance, but the 5K For room and board still has not dropped. My husband and I paid out of pocked to cover his dorm and meal plan for the semester, so we are anxiously awaiting his award to drop- has anyone else had this issue?? Pam
It could take up to 45 days after start of 1st semester.

If a scholarship recipient borrows to cover room & board after graduation/commissioning are those loans eligible for forgiveness?

All I see related to "military student loan" forgiveness online refers to enlisted personnel.

Not that I am aware of.

Temple University in Phily offers a $9K housing allowance to ROTC scholarship winners. University of Pittsburgh has ROTC housing that costs I think $7100 for room and board.

My DD has received a 4yr ROTC scholarship, which is fantastic. Her school offers R and B to ROTC students..........However, she is waiting to be cleared medically.........If she is unable to, she is still planning on enrolling at the school and joining ROTC, with the hope of reapplying for a scholarship and getting cleared for the next year. If she enrolls as a student and joins ROTC, do schools still give those students free R and B, or do you have to be contracted? Obviously, until she clears DODMERB, she can't contract or receive the scholarship. Anyone have experience with that? There is still a long way to go.

You'll need to call the college to find out. There are some schools that only offer the free room and board to scholarship winners and others are more generous and offer it to those whom are officially enrolled in ROTC classes, but are not yet contracted.

UVM (Vermont) offers R&B unlimited

Ohio University offers 1st semester and must be earned thereafter

Widener offers R&B unlimited

Hofstra offers limited R&B on case by case

It was mentioned further back in the thread that Morehead State in Kentucky covers housing for all scholarship cadets. I can confirm that this is still true. My DD and I went there yesterday for her PMS interview. Also, if you qualify for the Commonwealth Scholarship from them ($4000/semester) you can use it to cover a meal plan or any other costs you have that the ROTC scholarship does not cover.

My DS is on scholarship at GW. He receives $4k per semester in R&B discounts. This knocks the roughly $13k annual bill down to $5k which is very reasonable.

At Holy Cross we will only need to pick up the food bill the school picks up the room. This changes slightly for Jr and Sr housing there is a small increase, not a big deal.

Does anyone know if Washington State University or Grand Canyon University offers room and board as well?

Does anyone know if University of Arizona offers Room & Board to AFROTC cadets?

You're best bet to be certain of anything is to call the bursar's office or the AFROTC unit at University of Arizona. They will be the authoritative sources on this. Please share what you discover if you do call.

GCU offers it for all contracted cadets (so for 3 year advanced designees, they would not get it their freshman year. However, room and board at GCU is one of the most affordable she had looked at as well as their tuition. GCU was her plan B if she did not get a scholarship. My DD listed this as her first choice a few years ago as well and it was one of her options given to her by AROTC. She ultimately chose University of Portland. They offer Room and Board for all 4 years for 3 and 4 year recipients, for AROTC and AFROTC. That was not why she chose it, but it was a nice benefit.

GCU also has on campus apartments for upper class students (as does UP), and that is part of the scholarship. What is nice about GCU is about 80 percent of all students live on campus so it is a nice on campus community even when living on campus as a junior or senior.

My DD is in Army ROTC. I had to looked up some information on financial aid at her school for someone local about AFROTC and found something interesting that might be of use to the SAF community.

AFROTC Room and Board -

Cadets living in the residence halls actively receiving an ROTC scholarship will have their UP Air Force ROTC Room and Board Scholarship award amount calculated using the following formula: Total room and board charges (not including amenities fees) – total outside scholarships – Oregon Opportunity Grant – total Federal grant aid = UP Air Force ROTC Room and Board Scholarship (Capped at $6,587/each eligible semester (fall/spring)) Cadets with a three year scholarship will receive the cap in full their freshman year, regardless of other aid, so long as they are otherwise eligible for aid.
