Just found out no more Mountain warfare for this summer. Does anyone have any information on the new cruise that the marine options will be doing.

Technically, it would be the 2nd class cruise with the 3rd class cruise being CORTRAMID and the 1st class "cruise" being OCS Bulldog.

I have heard just basic scuttlebutt that it may be something like being attached to a Marine unit for x number of weeks -- similar to what the Navy does the 2nd class cruises.

I'll be watching the thread out of curiosity as well.

Hmmmm..... wonder why? DS didn't do Mt. Warfare. Instead he requested a cruise. Got the USS Ashland. They were doing a hull replacement with another ship in Japan, so he got to cruise from Norfolk to San Diego via the Panama Canal. He feels he learned way more than the folks who did Mt. Warfare that year, plus I don't know too many people who can say they've been through the Ditch.

The plan, currently, is to send Marine options on an amphib for their second class cruise. Mountain Warfare is going away. Some of the Marine staff/resources that were used to support Mountain Warfare will be utilized in a new "Crucible" event for Navy options; a pilot program is kicking off this summer and will take the place of 2nd class cruise for about 180 Navy options.

Now THAT is interesting!

Probably related to a whole "let's refocus on amphibious assault" effort. JMPO.

Definitely. A return to the sea.

Agree and understand. And yet... look where the current missions are taking our Marines. That said, I think the trade of mountain warfare for sea service is a good one (on an amphibious ship) - different "skills" and experiences but the gator navy is much more real-life.

Out of curiosity, will the amphib cruises for Marine Options be in "blocks" spread throughout the summer similar to the Navy 2nd class cruise?

Haven't heard. More details will likely come out in mid to late January, when NSTC typically starts sending summer cruise info to the units.

I heard that the Navy is changing its 3rd class cruise too, but I'm not sure if we're allowed to disclose details

New rumor is only very limited number of slots available for marine option 3/c amphib cruise. Unit told not to expect to have anyone attend.

Just checking to see if anyone is hearing any more updates from the unit level. No NSTC notices have been updated on the website, but that may not be the best indicator -- or at least the most up to date one.

My daughter said she applied for the amphib cruise this week, although she does not know when she will hear if she’s going. There’s three sessions offered and she had to list the sessions in order of her preference.

She also mentioned her unit leader is trying to get the cadets into a program that would have the kids inserted into various Marine areas (tanks, aviation etc), although the details on that are sketchy at this point, since she did not know much - and I know even less, ha ha!

So it sounds like there are dates floating (somewhat of a pun) out there for the cruises?

Phase Zero - 03 May - 25 May
Phase One - 29 May - 22 June
Phase Two - 25 June - 20 July
Phase Three - 23 July - 15 August

So nice to see this...I remember when she was starting the process. If I recall correctly, SAF posters steered her toward looking at SMCs, and the magic happened.

Indeed, Capt MJ! She was planning to enlist if not offered USNA. We hadn’t even heard of VMI until I found this forum. Now she can’t imagine being anywhere else!
