Should I retake the AFOQT?

So I took the AFOQT this year and didn't do too well on it. I passed, but I didn't get the scores that I was hoping for. Now, if I don't want to be a pilot, does it really matter how well I did as long as I passed? I'm not too worried about getting a field training slot since I have a decent ACT score, but I was told that they only look at AFOQT scores when it comes time for job selection. Does the AFOQT play a big role in non rated AFSC selection? I'd appreciate any input. Thanks!

I don't think you need to retake. I have friends that got minimums on the AFOQT and got intel, cyber, logistics, etc. If you want to be any type of engineer that may play a bigger role. I'd only retake if you need to better your rated scores, which you don't.

Globemast3r is right. Unless you’re trying to go rated retaking the AFOQT is pointless and too dangerous. What matters most in non rated selection usually is commanders ranking and honestly the needs of the Air Force at the time. So I would advise you not to retake it but improve you’re involvement in the detachment and be the best cadet you can be.

That's what I was thinking... but my APAS said that she thought I could do better, and that I should retake it in the fall. I'm trying to go intel and I'm currently top third UCR, with a 3.4 gpa as a Russian major, and a 97.7 PFA. She said that a better AFOQT score would really solidify my chances. Does anyone know the percentage that the AFOQT makes up for the overall AFSC package? I'm just not sure what to do and I don't want to take any unnecessary chances. Thanks again.

The problem with the AFOQT is that they use the scores from the latest test. If you do better, its great, if you do worse, then you are stuck with the worse scores.. Only you can decide but if you dont really need it, why take the chance

Humey, that's my main problem. I'm trying to decide if it's worth the risk or not. I don't know how important the AFOQT is for AFSC selection.

Why dont you talk to someone in command of your detachment. I would have to imagine they have a better handle on this

I did. And my APAS said she thinks I should retake it. But everyone here is telling me not to.

As someone who took it 3 times, I’d advise you to not retake. I was like you passed the first time was advised I could retake it in order to improve my rated scores. Unfortunately that didn’t happen, the second time I bombed that test. If it wasn’t for the waiver I would have never commissioned. So luckily I had that and I killed it the 3rd time. Now they aren’t even giving AFOQT waivers, so again I do not think you should retake it. Just worry about Commanders ranking, PFA & GPA. Do not risk your commission over it.
