USAFA avg was a 3.86, as of a few years ago, although uGPA is certainly not the deciding factor for admission.

Your school reported GPA by itself means very little in the admission's process. These types of post just add more stress to an already stressful process.
It matters a little? I thought academics take 60% of the point scale on admissions? so GPA would matter significantly right?
Just looking for clarification please. Thanks in advance!

JakobF, I believe the point is that a gpa, by itself, is a number with little meaning. The Academics category includes the rigor of your coarseload and your class rank to provide a context for the gpa. SAT/ACT test scores are even more important.

Out of context a 4.0 sounds perfect. But a student can have a 4.0 gpa without taking any AP (or other challenging) classes (even though they are available), be ranked below the top 25% of his/her class, and have below SA average test scores. Suddenly that 4.0 means little.

No one qualification is absolute. It is relative to what it is being assessed against by category and peers. In my experience with my DS applying to all the SAs and similarly competitive top colleges, if you fall within these ranges, academically only, you should be well prepared in your first year at any colleges and for Admissions consideration at any schools from any districts in the US.

UNWEIGHTED GPA 3.7-4.0
Weighted obscures true GPA and each Schools have different scale for the same A, 4.0-5.0 even 6.0. Also colleges look at only the core classes. No Art, no gym, no music, no wood shop, etc. Core classes are normally defined as:

English
Math
Science
Social Science
Language

Schools don’t rank then will use ACT/SAT National Rank, and will refer to graduation rate of your school i.e. 99% to 4 year colleges and school ACT/SAT Average is 29+ or 1350+. If your school falls below this still don’t matter! It is only an additional advantage for those who come from schools like this when colleges review your child’s transcript and grades. They give more consideration to students attending academically difficult schools. But have greater expectation from student taking advanced classes like their peers.

6-12 APs with at least 1 or 2 APs in STEM

ACT 31-36 all sections 30+
ACT Writing 8-10
SAT 1450-1600 all sections 700+
SAT II’s all in 700+

If you fall in this range, academically you are competitive at any colleges let alone at any SAs.

Post like these just add anxiety to a process that already has enough.

The academy will scale your GPA based on the profile of your school and class rank to develop one for the process.

Looking at just one portion of any scoring factor is almost useless. Please do not get wrapped up on that only perfect gpa/test scores are needed. The class profile shows that 30 ACT / 1335 SAT is the Mean.

The Academy wants intelligent well rounded young men and women to train as leaders.

As mentioned..... Einstein’s Law of Relativity. Your gpa is relative to what classes you took. And those classes are relative to what classes were available. Without that information, your gpa is meaningless.

Foreign Languages is part of the core classes???

Yes! For most or all colleges foreign language is a core class. So take the language you plan to continue in college. Most want 2 years min with same language but some competitive schools want 4 years in same language. You have to take min 1 year at West Point and min 2 years at USNA. You can also place out in language and not take it.

You are only required to take a foreign language at USNA if you are a non-STEM/ Humanities major. None of mine (Engineering majors) took a foreign language. They did not test out, because they all took Latin in HS.

So your children took high level of Latin in HS? And USNA took that as qualified language? If so then they were qualified in Language prior to enrollment. So your situation is different and many not apply to all Mids.

I am expecting many kids who didn’t take it to higher level of language must take language test to test out or take Language at the Academy. I will verify this with the Academy this Thursday when visiting the school. We need accurate and current info so we don’t walk in surprised at enrollment.

No, USNA did not qualify them in a language prior to enrollment and I wouldn't say they took a "high level" of Latin in high school. None of my children took AP Latin in HS. Two of them only took 2 years of Latin, one took 3 yrs. USNA wants all applicants to take at least 2 yrs of a world language in HS. This is different than the 4 semesters of a foreign language (listed as a core course requirement) they need to take or validate at USNA IF they are not a STEM (Tier I or II) major. If they are a Humanities/non stem major they will need to take or validate 4 semesters of a language, if they are a STEM major, they don't.

This list shows the core course requirements, please note the *** next to foreign language requirement:

I was a 4.0 unweighted (we didn't have weighted grades at my HS then) student at Air Academy High School, on the grounds of USAFA. A three-sport guy, after school job during off-season, CAP cadet, etc...etc...

And it only took me two tries to get into USAFA!

To go along with @flieger83, I was only in the top half of my class and had test scores in the upper 20s and I made it my first try. Some of my classmates joked that I must have been the only guy with shoes that day they took applications in Louisiana.

There are too many variables in the process to know.

I think that your standardized test scores are more important than your GPA. Everyone takes the same SAT/ACT test, but your GPA can vary a lot. For example, I have a little over a 3.9 uw GPA, which is not impressive (unless you have background information about my course load and the caliber of my school), but my SAT score is top 1-2%. I have friends with higher GPAs than me (at easier schools, with easier classes) that scored significantly lower than me on the SAT and have yet to hear back (I received my appointment last month).
