Any suggestions on a token gift for the candidate who will host my DD for an overnight visit to USMA?

My DD gave her host a Gift Card to a local restaurant last year. American Burrito & West Point pizza are big hits along with the sushi place. Starbucks is also inside Grant Hall.

Y'all: stop the gifting!! The cadets who host overnight visits have applied for and been selected to a program called CPRC (cadet public relations council). They want to do this. The big perk for CPRC is sometimes going home early to speak at schools, etc. They want to show people around and host. Anything more than baked goods is overkill.

My DS passes out his Scout Coin he helped design for his Units. It is a very cool oversized coin. Not cheap to custom make. But the true value is in why and how the coin is presented. It is custom made for our Troop and Crew with Council color and Units of US Forces with inscription of “Be Brave” and “On My Honor.” Thus it is one of a kind and probably the first coin these Cadets and Midshipmen ever got for their “daily good turn” so very special. Every Cadets and Officers who received it loved it! In the military where we gave out coins, you receive a coin from a person and you meet him/her again, you should have it with you. If you don’t have it with you, you buy him/her a drink. ^^ just a fun custom.

So you can think about something special from your personal inventory, hometown, momentos that can be something special. Enjoy your visits!

Baked goods sound like an awesome idea. If you don't bake, buy at your local bakery. Can't go wrong with a Snickerdoodle cookie or a dozen. Says, thanks, but not over the top - as poster above says - Cadets apply for this program it is not an obligation.

It's a very nice idea and would be much appreciated. Nothing at all wrong with a heartfelt thank you.

My DD is part of the CPRC and I agree, no gift is needed! We did give a Gift Card to her host when she did her overnight. It wasn't expected , at all, but it is just a nice gesture. My DD's only "perk" is they don't get inspected, lol

I'm a cadet. I've hosted a CC. My close friend was in charge of assigning CC's and whatever comes along with that. Based off my experience (and my friends) no one really expects gifts. Normally we volunteer to host a CC unless it's a recruit. Gifts are nice but to my understanding aren't the norm.

Back in the day, my daughter sent a small "manicure in a box" - some fun colors, a plain color that also met authos. Just something fun to say thanks for being a great hostess. It was appreciated and yes, maybe not the norm, but my daughter remained in touch with her hostess until she graduated.

I went to high school in the area and quite a few of my friends are cadettes at USMA. Any of them would enjoy an American Burrito giftcard, WP pizza, Starbucks, Amazon, etc. & of course brownies and such are good!

While a gift is not necessary, if it's something you can do it's always a plus. The Army quickly becomes family, and for your daughter to have a positive and lasting relationship with the cadet who hosted her will likely be a very good thing!

Oh, you went and did it. There was an entire thread a while back.
Everybody move along! Nothing to see here!

I second the cookies idea, or nothing. As mentioned, they don't really expect anything.

Take a note from the kid going to NASS and doing all his own legwork.

Let your daughter figure it out. When I see these kind of threads I think there is too much parental supervision. Some want to send gifts for all sorts of things. There have been posts about sending gifts to the commandant, supe. Sponsors, coaches, teachers, etc. and gifts, and graduation invitations to congressmen and senators. To me, that's a bit over the top. I guess cookies to share would be nice for a host, but it wont be expected and won't get your kid any brownie points. Did you send gift cards to the admissions committee?

As usual, my opinion is just mine.
