Hi everyone!

Can anyone give me some examples of scholarships that can help offset those $2000 that we need for our USMA initial deposit? I know they have to be a specific type of scholarship that doesnt anchor down to one school or one type of major...but I don't know how to research these.

Any cash awards you're given that are not institution specific. Cadets who cannot pay the $2000 just have a little more deducted from their pay until it's covered.

If your cadet candidate applies for scholarships through his schools guidance department, many of those are made out directly to the student, or can be made payable to the specific school. There are usually a lot of opps, but they have application deadlines. I would have DD or DS talk to their HS GC and inquire. Some of them are probably pretty small, but every $50 makes a difference. I know that my older DD's civilian school allows for a direct deposit into her account at the accounting department with scholarships that are made out in her name, and others that have to be made out to a school can be applied to other things, such as the 2K. As others have said, anyone with a college savings fund could use money from that to pay the 2k, but the cadet would be income tax on the earnings. The good news is that the early withdrawal from the fund would NOT be subject to the 10% penalty, when being used at a SA.

If you can’t come up with the 2000, the treasurer will just take a bit out of your pay each month. Look for scholarships offered by places like the American Legion and AmVets. School Guidance counselor should have a list of local scholarships. As long as the scholarship does not mandate that it is for tuition, books or room and board you are good.

My DD high school has a scholarship program where local businesses donate and then every student that applied for a scholarship received something. The company that "sponsored" her scholarship had dictated that it was for room/board/tuition and that the check had to be endorsed a certain way and it would be available AFTER July 3rd ( her R Day). She went to the school district, who was administering the scholarship checks, and showed them her appointment/acceptance letter to West Point along with the instructions in the Candidate Packet for how scholarship checks needed to be and a personal Thank You letter to the sponsor company. She asked for the check to be endorsed according to West Point requirement, and they willingly obliged.

I second the American Legion recommendation. My DD is working on a $1000 scholarship from them. I also second the recommendation to check with the guidance counselor. I suggest calling and making an appointment with him/her ASAP. Typically they are swamped with various duties and giving them a heads up via an appointment will give them a chance to prep and have stuff ready for you.

I also read on the westpoint web site to call them if you need scholarship and they will help you

Any local veteran program or club(Rotary) that has a scholarship program doesn't designate where the scholarship funds can go, you can also try MOAA (Military Officers Association of America)- our local chapter offers specific scholarships for graduates appointed into any of the academies and /or ROTC college programs. the MOAA and Rotary are the only local scholarships my son qualified for because most were either designated for an in state school or specific major/

Your guidance counselor and google should be the most help to you in this search.
