Rejection from USNA 2022

My DS received the TWE email just now. No offer of prep or any other programs, just no to all for USNA this year. Plan B will be excellent - a good university with a program he wants, and much closer to home (we live over 3000 miles away) so while sad for him, long term I am happy I will get to see him more often! He wants to reapply next year, so we'll see how this upcoming year goes - if he loves Plan B it's possible he could finish out his degree there and apply for OCS afterwards. At least now we know.
I know it's tough for the kids that receive the TWE. However, they still have options. I have two kids on active duty, and neither went to a service academy. Both went to large state schools. DD went through OCS and is now a SWO; DS went through AFROTC (without ever earning an AFROTC scholarship) and is now a pilot.
Keep the faith.
That is very encouraging and positive to hear! Thank you for this encouragement - I'll show your post to my DS too :)

NROTC 4 yr scholar mom here -- for those future Mids who did not choose NROTC off the bat or as "Plan b", let me say - I get the grief you feel on this mainly because we all want what our kids want. But, let me also then congratulate those of you who are 4 year NROTC recipients. You accomplished an amazing thing. The selectivity is on par with USNA and last year's NROTC 4 year slate had higher academic credentials than the USNA. There are reasons for that which I won't go into here but know that your DD or DS just joined a very happy group of kids at Yale, MIT, Stanford, Virginia Tech, Ga Tech, and others. And they join a very satisfied family of alumni that are Admirals, COs of installations and aircraft carriers. My DD is a happy aerospace and ocean engineering 4th class MIDN at VT and this year she took the exact same Naval Science classes as the Mids at USNA and will attend the exact same summer cruises and CORTRAMID training as USNA mids. The Navy greets them all alike. So celebrate. Their path will lead them to service and very often, they are quite happy in retrospect it took them down Plan B - which may be the best after all.

That is Just Frigging AWESOME!

At one point in my life I worked as an Atty for Boeing, here in Seattle. I was in my 30s and traveling all over the world supporting Boeing negotiations. Jakarta-Signapore one week, London-DC the next. I remember a couple of times coming home from DC, or Madrid, I'd be stopped at a traffic lights between SEA-TAC and home. I'd rest my head on the steering wheel for just a moment close my eyes and thank my Dad (where ever he was) for bringing his family to such a great place to set down roots.

UW is a great public Universtiy and there is tremendous opportuinity in Seattle, Portland, Boise. ROTC at the UW is a great idea, its a big school in a pretty big town. A group to identify with ,like ROTC, really helps on the social side.

Mo-Betta:
My DD was about 5 mths into her plebe year and happy as a clam. In a phone conversation, kinda out of the blue, she said something very close to this:
"Dad, you know I hate it when you are right, but you were right. If I wasn't here (USNA) the next best choice would have been the UW. I was stupid not to get that"
There was a time when she was weighing USNA vs Ivy's--------- and I was trying to figure out what I could sell.

Good luck to both your girls!-----2018 The Year of the DAWG!

R U guys on the West Coast?
For my DS, it’ll be “The Year of the DAWG!” Go Huskies!

Congrats. my son's girlfriend got on the waitlist for UW., and her email stated that UW got over 45000 applications for 6500 class. It's like 15% acceptance rate this year.

UCONN huskies one can only assume correct? My oldest is an alumni from UCONN.

The TWE arrived. But, thankfully Plan B is set and it’s at a top ranked university + NROTC. We prayed all along for the right door to open. Plan B is right up there with Plan A. So, I refer to it as Plan A.1.

Blessings to all.
Sorry about the TWE. Your DS certainly set up excellent options for next year. His plan A.1 sounds like a fantastic door to have open!
Thank you! Yes, excellent plan. My best to your DS for his upcoming path.

Direct admit to UW Engineering?! Now that's amazing! Congratulations!

There is an old joke, what do you call the person who came in last in his medical school class? Doctor

My point being is once you commission as a 2nd Lt or Ensign, you are all equal and no one cares how you became an officer. I am sure the academy provide other benefits down the line, but you will accomplish the same thing however you go, academy or Rotc

This discussion about getting into a particular school's engineering program makes me ask about my DS: he got accepted to engineering at a couple schools, but was a little surprised about only getting pre engineering at the U of Colorado. Does anyone know if Colorado is that rigorous, is there something about state schools, or any way to gauge this?

My son goes to Purdue. There program is ranked pretty high but it isnt hard to get into. The hard part is staying in the program. They have weed classes freshman year where lots of kids leave the program

Yup, I wasn't gonna say any thing (feel like I'm talking too much), but a pre qualification to the UWs Eng Program is impressive. Admission to specific schools with in the UW are VERY in compedative in some cases, Business, Accounting, Finance, Chem, Eng all highly compedative. Frankly, I've never heard of this before I have heard alot about kids not making it into thier dicipline of choice.

I find it interesting how the rest of you life will be determined or at the very least influenced by one academy saying yes and the other saying no. Its one thing if both say yes and you get to decide but its another when the choice is made for you. I dont say that in a negative way. It is just funny how life works and how the direction your life takes is sometimes in the hands of a total stranger. It is no difference in the civilian world. Columbia says no and USC says yes and you wind up marrying the girl or guy you meet at USC. How different your life would have been if you been accepted to Columbia. Congrats on your son getting accepted to USMA. You all must be very proud

My son goes to Purdue. There program is ranked pretty high but it isnt hard to get into. The hard part is staying in the program. They have weed classes freshman year where lots of kids leave the program

My DS got accepted FYE at Purdue which is his plan B (99.9% plan A now). They tell the kids to “look to your left and look to your right, only one of you will be here next year”. DS is actually going to do Early Start to get some of the classes out of the way. He will be applying NROTC as college program and hoping for a side loaded scholarship for the following year.
