Does anyone know when the official date for Swab Summer graduation is and how many days are the events for parents to attend? My DS is on the wait list but I am trying to coordinate time off with employer just in case. Thanks

I guessed USCGA was similar to USNA and posted a public-facing calendar. This may be helpful.

'Swab Summer Secured' is not a parent friendly event, nor is there time off. There is a 'boarding ceremony' where the swabs get their shoulder boards, but also not parent friendly event.

Parents Weekend (unless your swab is away for a sports obligation) is your first real opportunity.

You can't really come to Swab Summer "graduation," which isn't really a thing anyway. Swabs will get their shoulder boards but there's nothing to see and I'm not even sure it's open. This year they gave us either a long or a short (can't remember which) after CAP week, which is currently scheduled for 20-24 August. It usually happens but isn't guaranteed so it would be something of a gamble.

Question about the wait list. Are you given some sort of number as to where you are on the wait list, such as #21 in line or something like that to give you and idea if you have a chance for an appointment? I read somewhere on here that last year about 50 people that were on the wait list were eventually given appointments.

There's no order. They go back through and find who they think will fit.

Agree with the above posts, attending the Shoulderboard Ceremony is a waste of time from a time off work and money perspective unless you live right by USCGA. Even then, you will not have an opportunity to see your cadet. As an alternative, I would highly recommend attending the Mystic Flag Ceremony, which is held around the fourth week of Swab Summer. This is where the new class marks the halfway point of swab summer and receives their class flag. There is a formal drill and ceremony into the Mystic Flag Seaport before cadets are allowed to depart for a few hours of liberty with their families, sponsor families, etc.

Just wanted to chime in, they will live stream the shoulder board ceremony and have pics as well. Almost as good as being there :) & I agree, the Mystic Flag ceremony well worth the trip

Not all Swabs are at Mystic Flag Ceremony as some are on Eagle. I was able to attend Mystic Flag Ceremony when DS was a Swab.

As a caveat, dropping DS off at Chase that evening was an emotionally draining experience, much more than R day (now Day 1). There were many quite emotional parents in the parking lot as you could hear all the cadre yelling in the background and knowing that your DS or DD had to endure another three weeks of Swab Summer.

Thank you for adding on! I did neglect to mention that about a third of the swabs will be on Eagle during this ceremony. As you get closer to Day One, you'll find out what platoon your DS is in and will be able to figure out if he'll be there or not.

If you realize that your swab will be able to be at the Mystic Flag Raising Ceremony...please go! Our swab was so comforted and relieved that we were there!

Was with RJB at Mystic and agree with what he and Trackandfield08 have posted. If you can't wait until Parents Weekend, the Labor Day weekend is your best opportunity to spend time with your new 4/c cadet.
