Eczema Waiver Denied

DS waiver request for eczema has been denied for the second time by AFROTC. A retired military dermatologist evaluated him and didn’t find any sign of eczema and wrote a very positive report, but it didn’t help. When DS talked to HQ AFROTC they said there is nothing he can do. He had received four year Type 7 scholarship back in Sep that he was really proud of and he was looking forward to going to Texas A&M.
Certainly feels like end of road for him. Poor guy always wanted to join Air Force ever since he was 5, he didn’t even apply to other branches.
Is there anything he can do? We’ll appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

I would recommend he attend an affordable college without the scholarship and either:
  1. Participate in Air Force ROTC anyways and try to appeal the waiver. Or....
  2. Participate in Army ROTC, which is typically less picky than AF or Navy on DoDMERB, and earn a campus based scholarship or contract.

There is a private consulting firm - google “DODMERB consultants” - run by a former DODMERB retired military doc. Read all the menu sections and dropdowns. Many here have posted they have had positive outcomes using his services. You might be able to see more clearly where the path is truly blocked or whether there is a chance of pushing through the brambles in a re-application scenario.

Thanks for the guidance.
DS was disappointed but took it well. Looks like in-state school and probably join Army ROTC. He wants to major in Civil Eng.

Af99,

Curious, What age was your DS when he last received any type of excema medication?

Af99,

DS was 13 yr and 3 months old.
It was one time rash on his face, never happens again. DS still believes that it was some kind of bug bite but his pediatrician wrote eczema on the report.

See that drives me crazy. I dont blame the doctors, but in order to make it quick and simple, they put a diagnosis that may or may not be the problem. Reaction from bug bite or ezcema, in the end the treatments ares probably close so what is the harm if you put one skin condition or another when its a minor one time problem. Of course 8 years later, it bites u in the butt

we are appealing one more time let’s see what happens, not very optimistic however. I think DS is shattered from inside but he is not expressing.... I noticed he has slowly started to remove Air Force posters from his room, some are from elementary school... it sucks to be helpless.....

My daughter had the keyword "eczema" flagged as part of an unrelated remedial. The note was part of a visit from when she was two years old where she had a rash behind her ear. We pointed out that the rash was not "chronic or recurring" and we didn't hear another thing about it. DD did get her eventual waiver for the unrelated condition.

I understand that DoDMERB is forced to react to any potential condition that is mentioned in the record. The downside is that civilian MD's seem to throw around red flag keyword DX's pretty loosely. A physician's note confirming my daughter's original condition no longer existed no doubt played a role in her waiver. Did you ask your PCP to write a letter to DoDMERB confirming that the "eczema" was a single event and no longer existed?

Apologies as I saw your OP about the note.
