Hello,
DS found out today, waiver denied by AFROTC for an old knee issue which never required surgery and fully resolved a year ago without resurfacing despite vigorous training XC, indoor track and outdoor track.
It is a lot on the line financially.
What can we do now? Any advice?
Ugh.
Thanks

What are the steps in appealing with AFROTC? DS has not picked a school yet. We are hoping that someone has been through this with AFROTC and can offer advice.

Four suggestions for your DS:
  1. Enroll in an affordable college that offers AFROTC, and attempt to appeal the waiver denial...perhaps through a DoDMERB consultant.
  2. Enroll in Army ROTC and compete for a campus based scholarship as the Army tends to be more liberal on waivers than the AF.
  3. Enter an affordable college and apply to Marine Corps PLC.
  4. Finish your degree without ROTC and attempt to enter the Air Force through OTS.

Thanks, this is quite frustrating.
The AFROTC Scholarship has to be "accepted" by May 31st. Is it realistic to think that an appeal can be done by then? I don't imagine that you can accept the scholarship unless you are medically qualified?

Idk about afrotc but if it is similar to arotc. I accepted my scholarship before I even found out I was dq. From what my local ROO told me, you are on your own for tuition until your waiver clears and you won’t be reimbursed; however, once your waiver or appeal is completed you will start receiving funds.

Hey, I’m having a similar issue with my waiver denial for Army ROTC. I am appealing it right now but I am concerned that if they see my waiver was denied that they will pull my scholarship. Is that the case, and if so how much time do I have to fix it? If that is not the case, do I just keep trying until I get my waiver approved and I will still be able to use the scholarship? Although I am willing to do so, I would prefer to not be worrying about securing a scholarship during my freshman year of college if I have already earned one now. Thank for any help or insight you can provide!

You can accept the scholarship without being medically qualified. I would go ahead and accept it. Then contact the detachment at the school your DS wishes to enroll in and let them know of the situation. The DoDMERB just needs to be clear prior to him contracting when he arrives in the fall (presuming a 4-year scholarship). I was also dq’d and waiver denied from AFROTC but was successful in rebutting the denied waiver after sending in additional documentation/doctor opinions and actually speaking to someone on the phone. Took a while and it was painful but it does happen.

Thanks for the advice and insight. I will do what I can from my end and hope for the best. Also thanks for letting me know of your personal experience, at least I know it’s possible and it gives me hope that I will be able to fix this. Thanks again and I hope all is going well for you.

Keep in mind that tuition benefits won't kick in until you contract, and you will be unable to contract until you get your waiver.

I don’t think they will take your scholarship away. However, you won’t get any of it until you pass your pt test and your medical waiver is approved.

Not paying the school is technically a temporary withdrawl of the scholarship.

You’re very welcome! Let me know if you have any more questions about AFROTC. I commissioned in 2016 and neither of the waivers ever came back to bite me :). Best of luck to you! Unfortunately I also know too many people whose waivers were denied while in AFROTC (1-2 years into the program) and didn’t get to continue.

What was the issue with the knee?? I just got a waiver for a past issue on my knees and I never got surgery but mine was 6 years ago though.
