Our DS was initially DQ'ed for astigmatism, but qualified on Dec 5th. He was accepted to USMA and USNA and accepted appointment to USNA. Yesterday, he received a letter from DoDMerb that he is now pending again with the following info:

"At the request of US Naval Academy, a subsequent review of your medical examination was conducted. It has been determined that Additional Medical Information (AMI) is required before we can make a final determination."

Anyone have experience with this? It's odd that he was qualified and then it reverted back, could this be a mistake??

Don't despair. I'm betting he will be cleared. They both want him. Just do what they ask. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for the encouragement! We’ve got an optometrist appt on Friday, kicked into action mode. My DS is hanging in there...I just said the other day that he’s had so little adversity over the last year that I’m worried about what would happen if he faced some. He’s handling it fine.

Ha, neat cooincidence. I am going on Friday to eye doctor for AMI regarding vision for USCGA. Good luck! I hope DoDMERB / USCGA is fast enough to get me either approved or declined for a waiver by May 1 so I can l finalize my college.

My advice would be for you as the parent to accompany your DS to that appointment to make sure everything is handled completely accurately and thoroughly.

Best of luck.

And don't be afraid to explain the exact purpose of your visit and convey the service academy limits on astigmatism BEFORE s/he conducts any testing!

Agreed on both. I’m coming home early from my business trip to accompany. Also, I recalled that my oldest son is enlisted Air Force and had to get a waiver for his eyes four years ago. His optometrist happened to be a reserve AF officer and said he knew exactly what they were looking for. Guess who our appointment is with Friday??

The standard for astigmatism is 3.00 diopters. If I read the prescription correctly (I an not an expert) the astigmatism is 2.25 and 1.25 diopters (identified as CYL). Contact lens prescriptions are different than eye glass prescription, but it should be within the standard. Do you know what the measurement was from the DoDMERB eye exam.

No, did not get the results, only that it was outside 3.00 diopters

The DODMERB and USN standard for astigmatism is -/+ 3.00. Your cylinders are within standards based on your contact lens prescription but can be different for glasses. Can you get corrected to 20/20 with glasses?

What pops out at me is the “BC” which stands for base curve. Yours is 8.9. The normal is about 8.3. The 8.9 suggests to me your corneas are very steep. You will need to get a corneal topography to determine the true shape of your corneas.

Maybe that’s the red flag the USN saw.

Have an appointment Friday and a corneal topography is part of it. My only issue through this whole thing is that we already got a waiver in December. I can’t get an answer as to why we’re back to DQ now.

I agree with you. It’s hard to figure out why the USN changed its mind after giving you a waiver in December.

When you submitted the AMI for the initial waiver request, did you have to include a corneal topography back then?

He got qualified without an AMI. He had an issue with his ears, after we sent that in about a month later he flipped to qualified for USNA and USMA. Got offers for both in January

GAdawgs, I am so sorry this has happened and can't imagine the frustration your DS is feeling. Following the admissions posts looking for GA appointments, I saw early on that your DS was accepted to USNA and USMA and declined USMA for USNA. My DS got the TWE from USNA last week (Tuesday wave) and is still pending waiver for USMA. We are losing hope at this late date but I will continue to pray for both boys and hope that your issue is resolved quickly and in your favor!

Thanks for your prayers, I will do likewise for your DS, and sorry about the TWE. Though my son is frustrated, he told me last night that at worst he has been accepted to Georgia Tech and if he doesn't get his dream gig that this one isn't bad.
