Defer Admission

I have received an appointment to usafa, but have been waitlisted at usna, which is my top choice. I am wondering if usafa allows appointees to defer their appointment to next year (in order to do a year of civilian college and reapply to usna) without having to reapply to usafa. If not, is it frowned upon to decline an offer of appointment to usafa and reapply the following year (as a backup to usna)?

I am assuming you have until May 15th to accept USAFA. If Navy doesn't come through by then, you'll have to make a choice.
I am only a parent, but I can't recall reading a post about deferring appoints on this forum in the last 5 years or so. See that there about 75 posts coming up when entering "defer appointment" in the Search box; maybe the answer lies therein. Good Luck.

I do not believe any of the SAs offer a deferred admission. We had a somewhat similar question with regards to church missions for LDS appointees and in talking with admissions at USNA were advised that the choice was either reapply and go through the nomination process again or accept the appointment, attend 1 - 2 years, withdraw for a mission and do an abbreviated reapplication two years later. We visited with a mid at USNA who had an appointment, chose to serve a church mission, and then had to reapply and repeat the nomination process. He was successful.

My grandson's USAFA appointment gives him until May 1 to accept so I would assume that you will have to make a decision on the USAFA appointment by that date. I don't think you could go wrong with either SA. There is so much that could go haywire should you decline the USAFA appointment hoping for a USNA appointment next year that I wouldn't chance it. You could, however, accept the USAFA appointment and if USNA comes through, contact admissions at USAFA and inform them that you have changed your mind on your acceptance.

+1 to Vaquero.

You don't seem committed to USAFA but do seem committed to Navy. Why not do NROTC at a civilian college. You could enroll for entry this fall and apply for the high school scholarship and then side-load scholarships if that doesn't come through. Not a full ride but it gets you where you (seem to) want to go. You could also still re-apply to USNA.

Of course if you do want that 24x7 military environment and a full ride, then by all means accept the USAFA offer by May 1.

Better question is what happens if he accepts on the last day May 1 and then on May 15, USNA comes back and says that he has been accepted? Does USAFA inform USNA that he accepted and at that point USNA wont make an offer, or USNA doenst get informed that quickly and he accepts USNA and tells USAFA he is going another way

That is an excellent question!

There is no communication between USAFA and USNA regarding your application, your appointment, your acceptance nor your declining of an offer. They are not actively competing for you.
Those communications are your responsibility to the respective SA on the decisions you ultimatley make.

While this might not resolve your dilemma, there are cadets that cross commission at the end of four years. So I guess the question is, is the Naval Academy what you want or a naval career?

No. Each year is a new year and nominations don't carry over from year to year. Yes. While candidates have declined admission, reapplied and gotten in the next year this is very rare. Both USAFA and USNA have a 1 May date to accept or decline. You can wait until 30 April to see if USNA will make you an offer. Note that if you neither accept nor decline your USAFA appointment by 1 May it is rescinded. If you really want USNA that badly, that you will wait a year, USAFA definitely has concerns about your motivation.

Yes it happens. It's extremely rare and therefore somewhat unlikely. There also need to be someone from the other service who wishes to cross commission to the service you're coming from.

JSpferr. It appears you want to commission from USNA more than USAFA but remain flexible with which service. This is evident by your original post and because you applied to both SAs.

If USNA is where you want to graduate then NROTC Scholarship or self funded is the better option to reapply to USNA with ROTC Nom + MOC. But likely that you need to present your Fall grades before USNA gives you a full Appointment. If you qualify. You will have to work hard and produce mostly A’s in the Fall Term. There is no LOAs given out if applying from college.

You can also take USAFA Appointment and apply to USNA while there. However, before USNA can give you a conditional or full Appointment, you will have to resign from USAFA and take the risk of maybe not getting an Appointment from USNA after all. SAs cannot give Appointment to another Cadet at another SA until he/she has resigned.

And yes you can apply for cross Commissioning intent in your Junior Year and talk to USNA Lecturer on duty at USAFA.

You have some important thinking to do. If I were in your shoes, unless you have another great ROTC option to pursue, paid or self paid, I’ll take USAFA Appointment and see if Air Force career is right for you. If not you can transfer to Civilian college after 2 years and take the 2 year ROTC Scholarship to commission into the Navy or cross commission into Navy from USAFA. USAFA is another great Academy you can be proud of. All SAs are incredible. Just different careers and service culture.

Good luck.

JSoferr,

from the 2022 USAFA appointee booklet: "If you would like to decline after previously accepting your appointment notify the Admissions Office as soon as possible."

CrewDad has given you good advice--accept the USAFA appointment prior to the May 1 deadline and you may find that an Air Force career is for you; however,
if not, you still have viable alternatives.
