Im going to a different college this year and was planning on doing aviation flight science. However, I have started to change my mind because it is a lot of money to fly and i am not sure ill be able to afford it. I was going to change my major to computer science or computer engineering, and apply to the coast guard academy next year. Would it be possible for me to, if i got accepted, switch my major from computer science to aviation at USCGA?

Thank you!

If you haven’t already, I recommend reading every page, dropdown and link at USCGA.edu. Here’s a place to start: the majors available at USCGA.

https://www.uscga.edu/academics/

By researching the primary source, you will understand the difference between undergraduate academic major and commissioned career field.

And, no matter how much college you have under your belt, you start as a freshman at a Service Academy. You may be able to test out of certain courses or into an advanced section, but I am not as familiar with USCGA practice in that area.

So i would have to major in something else, like engineering? How would they train to become a pilot? I understand now that they are different things, but if i was aiming to become a pilot, would I eventually be trained in that or no?

It’s clear you need to settle in and do some research.

I just googled “Coast Guard pilot training.” I am confident you can find the answer in the multiple official and unofficial search results.

I hope you realize I’m coaching you to do the basic research yourself by taking the initiative to research the primary sources out there.

Browsing the various forums here, keeping in mind it is an anonymous Internet forum, can also broaden your understanding of the real issue here - serving as an active duty officer in the Armed Services for at least 5 years, and what that entails.

The USCGA does not have a "aviation" major. They don't have Aerospace Engineering either.

My son also majored in Flight Aviation. However, that isnt somethng you major in at the academies. You major in a traditional major and if you qualify and are selected for flight training prior to graduation, you will be taught to fly when you enter your branch of the military. You can major in flight at a college and do Rotc, but there is no guarntee you are going to fly for the military
