April: and you are still waiting...

Anyone have any advice on what to do right now besides wait? Any emails I can send to reinforce interest, any email to say id be happy to take AOG, anything at all? Thanks.
Sounds like you didn't win your congressional slate and that you didn't make the top 150 for the NWL. You are most likely competing for the remaining slots, which are probably less than 100 at this time. I assume the request for someone to speak on your behalf it help you secure one of those remaining spots. Total speculation on my part...of course. Good luck.

Of course that would open the door to another 100 potential slots. I have no clue when that is decided. It could very well be that they are trying to decide if you should receive a Presidential nomination. We are all just speculating here. No one knows your specific case, except for Admissions. I do know if you were my kid, I'd have her lining up that person to speak on her behalf and probably get a second. You were told you were close...push it across the finish line.

Agree with Livein................leave no stone unturned! Maybe a call to the RC to perhaps get some direction as to the specific type of person who would speak about what an incredible candidate you are, but certainly don't hesitate to take some action. Good luck, pulling for you.

Got news that I am below the cut line. However, every year people break bones, have bad grades, and get medically disqualified and I will therefore move up being 3Q. Wit that being said, I was told I would have been accepted last year already with the file I have now, however, USMA decreased the class size by 100 this year. I was told if direct doesn't work this year, I could get AOG and almost be guaranteed admission next year. Not good or bad news, just news.

Sounds like my DD story last year. Take the AOG if offered! Let it be known you want the AOG ( if you really want West Point), as it is your Willy Wonka Golden Ticket.

@ontothefray22 "Below the cut line"--I am glad you called and got clarity. It is just news. You still are waiting...I am glad you reached out and learned this important information.
AOG is a great way to go--if USMA is your only dream. Otherwise ROTC at your chosen school, is also a wonderful way to learn and then serve.

And the email TWE came today... a crushing blow. Plan B is an amazing opportunity for him - 4 yr AROTC at a great school - but this morning this one still stings. Older brother's graduation next month from USMA will be tinged by some sadness. But, he knows his weaknesses and will forge ahead with reapplying. But not today. And I'm not sure I could take another round like this one. Older brother got his appointment in early Jan. - this has been a slogfest! Good luck to the rest of you who wait and wait and wait.

The hardest part to hear was "you would've been accepted already if you applied with this file last year." However, they told me people will break bones, have bad grades, and get arrested and to not throw in the towel because there's a good chance I get in this year.

Portal updated today and DD received her TWE. How and when do you get an AOG scholarship? She is set on the Citadel, however MMI was her plan C, thoughts on which would be better to reapply next year?

@Proudteachermom The Citadel is an awesome choice. If she goes to El Cid, she is likely to be happy, proud, and stay. These are all great choices. I only encourage prep if someone else is paying for it. Other people here feel differently, I am practical like that. MMI has a great track record for getting self-sponsored kids into USMA. It is really a personal and family choice when it comes to how you spend your money.
I have not seen where a lot of people have letters in hand from AOG yet...maybe soon.

If you one are of the lucky ones to get offered a Golden Ticket take it!! DS was offered one last year and was told "pass your classes, don't get arrested, and we'll see you next July".. Exactly what happened.. MMI had 20 AOG's and 20 offered appointments, last year they were 27/27.. They told the AOG's on day 1, "right now your appointment is in your hands, don't lose it". I understand the disappointment, we lived it last year, now DS says MMI was the best thing that ever happened to him. He studied, bonded with the other AOG's going to West Point with him , and spent countless hours lifting and running. It was a year well spent.

Well we were talking and she said she feels that mmi would be a smarter move financially and to prep for West Point, now we will wait and see if she gets an aog and that might change her view because she really liked the citadel, thanks for all the advice. She is heart broken bit ready to prepare and retry.

Sorry to sound uneducated on this topic, but could someone explain what AOG is and how it is offered?

AOG stands for "Association of Graduates". It is a USMA alumni group which offers a small number of scholarships each year to candidates who narrowly missed gaining appointment yet were 3Q qualified and in the eyes of admissions stand an excellent chance of success at West Point. An AOG scholarship is called a Golden Ticket because it is a virtual guarantee of appointment the following year. They are offered through West Point admissions usually at the end of the admissions cycle to those who just missed this year. Accepting the AOG scholarship does not eliminate the possibility that appointment may still be offered.

AOG scholarships require the candidate to attend a military college/junior college from a small list supplied by W.P. . Currently the most successful of those schools in gaining appointments is Marion Military Institute (MMI) in Marion, Alabama. Hope that helps..

Just for clarification, will the candidate receive a TWE prior to an AOG offer or does admission just offer the AOG without first sending a TWE?

The bulk of the AOG scholarships have been sent out this year. I know that it can come before a TWE, and I'm pretty sure that in some cases it can come after, but that is rarer.

This is not to say that I know that more will not be sent out; I do not know that and do not wish to crush any hopes. I am sure that as some deny it and we move on in the process other offers should go out.
