Yes they do. You are not in Kansas anymore... Keep in mind that these classes are spread out over three trimesters from late July through late June. The course load at Kings Point is brutal. In order to make room for a full year at sea, they have to cram four years of classes into three years. It is amazing how hard these young people work for their degree and their license. Once they come home for Christmas vacation, their high school friends will be complaining about having to take 12-14 credits at their colleges. It will be apparent by then how brilliant your kids continue to be. Hold on and prepare to be amazed!

Slightly different than when we were on a quarter system but looks about right. The reality is that by 2/C (Junior) year an engineer will look back and say that only about half of that course load was actually hard and about half now feels like fluff. Some of those are only one and two credit classes.

Just for a point of reference: this was our DS's first trimester schedule. As you can see, and as we quickly learned, Kings Pointers (especially Plebes) are on the go all day long. Like kpmom2013 said, "You're not in Kansas anymore". One of the most useful things our DS has learned so far is time management....

Also, some of these classes (e.g. swimming and first aid) are only 6 weeks long or half a trimester. This type of course load is why:
1. Sometimes your DD/DS is grateful just to get a C and move on.
2. When you ask them how their classes are going, you will get a response like, "You have no idea..."
3. When they finally come home, all they want to do is sleep. It's like they are a newborn again and you have to peek in their room every once in awhile to make sure they are still breathing.

Uh not really... Intro to nautical Sci and intro to marine engr are 100% BS classes. Literature pretty much is too. Calc and chemistry can be hard if you don't know what you're doing with them.

2.0 and Go!! Yeah, it is a lot. Plebe year is actually easier than the others, except for that end of 1st Class year. We were on the quarter system in my day and that last one, after license felt like a vacation, but we carried as many class hours as most "regular" colleges. It's funny. I talk to my co workers that went to regular colleges and they talk about scheduling classes so they didn't have to get up early in the morning. . . or even my double degreed daughter (who didn't choose a life maritime for some reason) . . . . it is a challenge, to be sure. But so is going to sea. . . .

How many courses have you taken at Kings Point again?
Unfortunately women were not allowed at Kings Point when I was your age. So the answer to your question is none. I am writing here to try to answer questions and be helpful to those who come to this forum seeking help. My answers are taken from the experience of my two kids who are pretty darn smart and struggled with one or two classes nearly every trimester at Kings Point. Apparently, you are so brilliant that you do not need to study. Instead you have lots of free time to spend on this forum spewing hatred and discontent. It would be great if you could even one time post something positive or helpful here for those new parents and students who come here seeking guidance.

Kpmom, I appreciate you so much. I'm sorry that comment was made to you.

I don't think it matters if women were allowed to attend at the time or not. There is a ton of fluff in the curriculum. As with any college some classes are harder than others and we all know from just talking every trimester what they are. I'm not brilliant at all. I wouldn't even consider myself smart...I've studied probably more than I should have to maintain a 3.6+ GPA.

3.6+ GPA and not an ounce of tact....

MMA19kid: My post was in no way intended to differentiate the "BS classes" from the "hard" classes. Only giving an example of what a daily schedule looks like. The original post inquired about the curriculum for 4th class year. Don't be so quick to criticize. As KP parents and alumni, we're just trying to help in some small way.
