My son has joined the ranks of the Class of 2022. What is the relevancy of the RISE program, and should my son attend? He is not needing any special assistance, and has no desire to be pampered to feel special. However, is there a way he can report to this and contribute?

Yes, he can report to it and contribute.
Thank you for that reply. Do you think he should mention that before he signs up or just show up and contribute?
mention what, exactly? That he is going to "contribute"? What does that even mean?

You know what the Rise program is, right?

Here the synopsis of it from the first rise event in 2013:

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy Office of Diversity Affairs will hold a unique program on campus for incoming underrepresented cadets called R.I.S.E. (Respect and Inclusion Summer Experience) June 28 and 29.

The R.I.S.E. program, much like other pre-orientation programs conducted on college campuses across the country, is a research-proven method of retaining underrepresented students in higher education.

Incoming first-year cadets will arrive on campus prior to Swab Summer to learn about the various resources available to assist them in their transition to the Coast Guard Academy. Through a series of workshops and panels, students are introduced to the academic and social support professionals on campus representing the various offices and departments with which students should immediately familiarize themselves. Some of these include the Commandant of Cadets, Dean of Academics, Diversity Affairs, Chaplain’s Office, and Director of Athletics.

Other workshops explore how diversity both challenges and enriches the experiences of students. Additional events throughout the program provide opportunities for students to create a sense of community that will benefit them throughout Swab Summer and their fourth class year.

Your tone is rather harsh. Next time just provide the link or at least give credit to your source. You know what plagiarism, right?

Plagiarism is passing off someone else's work as your own. Since I gave attribution, I most certainly didn't plagiarize anything. My tone wasn't harsh - i honestly don't know what you are asking.

Why do I get the feeling they started with RISE and tried to come up with a word for each letter? It's like the PATRIOT Act.... "We have seven letters to work with here..."

Yes, he can report to it and contribute.

Follow the question mark. Another question: Did you participate in RISE?

Why would you not participle in something that provides additional support in a new and challenging environment? I attended a different service academy 20+ years ago, if there had been a program for 17 year old, low income girls who had never been away from home more than overnight, you can bet I would have taken advantage. My point is that you don’t really know how your son will adapt and the more connections he can make to support his goals, the better his chances of success. It’s not about pampering and feeling special, it’s about adapting and succeeding.

Just my 2 cents and I don’t know anything about this program. Good luck to your son! Make sure someone writes to him every day of basic training. My dad sent at least a quick note and it was appreciated.

Does anyone know where/how we could register for this RISE program? Is there a website or do we need to be invited? Is there a contact person for this program if we want to be invited or need more information?

No desire for Pampering? Perfect!! He'll LOVE Swab summer ;) j/k All kidding aside, my son was invited last year for being a First Gen college student, but decided that he would be at the Academy for 4 years and took those extra days to say good-bye to friends and family. But if he does do go, it's a nice deal to get acclimated before swab-summer.

Is this by invitation only? Can you tell us how you got the invitation? If we want to attend but didn’t get an invitation, do you know who is in charge of the program?

RISE (Respect and Inclusion Summer Experience) Program participants get to know each other better today during some "ice breaking" activities.

RISE is a three-day program geared toward setting first-generation college students and first-year under-represented minority students up for success as cadets at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

Still wondering the same too. Can’t seem to find answers anywhere on USCGA website. We’ve seen some pictures from past years RISE and are really interested in attending but can’t find any information. Would truly appreciate if anyone who already got invitations to give us some insight on how we can sign up. Thank you!

By the way if you report in early for this program, will the Academy house the participants? Is there a fee involved to participate in the program?

After I accepted my appointment, the next package had a flier talking about it and mentioned that registration will open soon...probably sign up through Bears Den as an event.

There was no mention of a fee but did say that they would pay for one hotel room for the duration.

On the Class of 2022 page on the website, there is a description and the coordinator contact information.

Was able to find the information on the 2022 page. Thank you for the info! There’s nothing on Bears Den still when we checked though. Is it just us? ... or was anyone able to register already?

I don't think registration is open yet.

Ok great, thank you!

I'm currently a cadet at the Academy and just thought to pop my head in to see when my younger brother would be accepted/denied for AIM.

Funny that I'm seeing this thread because I attended the RISE program before my Swab Summer.

The RISE program is designed to give first generation college or first generation under-represented minorities future cadets a taste of what the Academy is like. You'll get here a couple days before R-Day and get to talk to the Dean of Academics, multiple club and council representatives, cadets, etc. I thought it was the perfect program for me because, coming from California, I had a chance to spend time with my future classmates ahead of time, spend time in the CT/RI area, and get used to the time change/weather.

Your word choices are funny. "pampered to feel special" "special assistance". This program is not made to make a swab feel special. It is specifically designed to offer the swabs an outlet to get a little more familiar with the system, the Academy, and Swab Summer before it all happens. He doesn't and can't "contribute". Again, this is not some pre test for swab summer. I don't know what you mean by "contribute" because the only contributing that he can do is be active and excited, as any swab should be.

Any more questions?

I think the hang up is often, why not other candidates? Swab summer isn’t fun. It’s... unpleasant. Any future swab would benefit from a three day familiarization. I certainly could have had a slightly better summer.... hahaha
