We are pretty late in the process because of the late appointment. Would any one help us to find out how to obtain an unwanted reservation at The Thayer from 6/30-7/3? I called the hotel but it is already fully booked long ago. Thanks.

You don't really need to be at the Thayer. Try the HOliday Inn Fort Montgomery.
For R Day we always stayed at the Hampton Inn Central Valley/Woodbury.

Also, did you all ask to be placed on the wait list? ASK!

I am so sorry CDKD. people also go to Fishkill and Nanuet.

2 weeks ago we were on the wait list due to a late appointment and something opened up in a week. Also the Bear Mountain Inn is nice

How difficult is it to get in the gates the morning of R day?
What are the best towns to stay in with an easy morning drive in?

We are on the wait list at Thayer, I wonder how that came through so quickly?

@DDmom It is really not so horrible on R-Day--but you will want to give yourself time--as you will have to get through the gate, drive to the parking lot, then take the shuttle to Ike Hall (or if it is a different venue, that venue) and then stand in line waiting to get into Ike Hall--like for hours. The entries are staggered--although I suggest going early (it is a three hour block of arrives starting at 0600)--the later you arrive, the longer you will wait in line. With my first one, we were the second set inside to say goodbye; with the last one, we were down the hill, around the corner, and double wrapped in a parking lot behind a building. A lot of cadet candidates do not arrive with families--so it is definitely NOT 1000 cars trying to get through the gate (like during graduation). (You will want to make sure that your child eats--and that you have a bottle of water and a snack/banana/protein bar/granola bar--which might sound like you are packing off your toddler for pre-school--but the line is long, it will be hot, and someone in your group will get hangry--and your son or daughter needs to be completely A-Game. If you cannot get into the Thayer or Ft Montgomery--try Fishkill or Woodbury/Central Valley. (Your girl won't sleep well the night before anyway--just make sure that she eats breakfast or a banana or something.)

There is a fairly new Holiday Inn Express in Chester, NY right off of Route 17. According to Google it’s approx 32 minutes/23 miles to USMA. ( You’d take Route 17 East to Route 6(bear Mountain) to Rt 293 to Rt 9 Stony Lonesome/USMA. It’s an easy ride and fairly close. (Definitely closer than Fishkill or Mahwah, N.J. There are several bed and breakfasts in Warwick NY as well. Best of luck

As far as getting in the gate...depends on your report time, but it's not bad. We go low budget and stay at the West Point Motel. Also, it's a nice drive from Fishkill ...and there are nice restaurants and things to do there. I've never stayed at the Thayer. It will be fine wherever you stay.

We just came back from my sons overnight visit and we stayed at the doubletree Nanuet. We are staying there for R day and A day too unless I find a good Airbnb for A day because I’d love to cook for my ds. I loved the doubletree. It was clean and quiet and Nanuet has a great Target and plenty of good restaurants. It’s a really easy drive on the palisades parkway too. It took us 25 minutes. Being a Midwestern flatlander I’m not used to winding mountain roads so I like the parkway a lot. We stayed in Peekskill last summer at a holiday inn express and it was nice too. Even though Peekskill is closer in miles, it still took 20-25 minutes to get there because it was raining and the road is winding.
