We were actually assigned to University of Maryland, but our son has already fallen in love and committed to Va Tech Corps of Cadets. Got the t-shirt, sent in the paperwork, got the DODmerbs qualification. Here's hoping they allow for the transfer. He's so excited to have received the scholarship, but we're bit panicked at the moment until we are certain the schools can be changed. Any experience or advice would be very appreciated.

Hopefully copied correctly....
Asterisk because of the 5 schools DS listed Cornell is the only one that’s denied admission. Of course! :) So we join with the others in the mad scramble to align the award with where DS was actually admitted. What a year, and it’s not over yet... but we’re now a Navy family! Will update our listing when all is settled.
Super proud of my son’s decision to serve his country - as if I wasn’t already bursting about this guy. And from what I’ve read here on the forums, he’s in great company!

Hope his transfer works out.

Far above Cayuga's waters
With it's waves of blue
Stands our noble Alma Mater
Glorious to view.

So I believe my numbers are right ... correct me if I’m wrong.

To date:
1 Nurse
4 Marines
23 Tier 1
8 Tier 2
4 Tier 3
1 Tier 3 LREC

Anybody want to figure out the schools?
All right, I'll do it. First is alphabetical. Second is sorted by number of firm commits. The "or" indicates possible number change based upon those that have yet to select between 2.

Now, about my username... I was lucky to recieve a Type 7 AFROTC scholarship after I got turned down at USAFA a few months ago and I was 100% ready to pursue that route, but on the 23rd my NJROTC CO called me down to tell me I also got a NROTC scholarship. I'd honestly given up on it since my NROTC package was complete in December and I hadn't heard a word since then, but it came through at the very end! Interestingly enough, the AFROTC and NROTC scholarship will pay almost the exact same costs at A&M, so I've spent the last week choosing between services. It was such a hard decision considering I've wanted to fly for as long as I can remember, but I've decided to go the Naval Aviation route instead of going USAF. (See ya there, BlackIce!)

Tough weekend for DS and Family. After receiving a TWE from the Naval Academy earlier in the month, same result came this weekend for the 4 year NROTC scholarship. Needless to say, we were all somewhat shocked and very disappointed. We understood that an appointment to the Naval Academy was going to be very difficult but felt that he was a viable candidate (based on feedback from those who had experience with the Academy and the appointment process). We really thought that Plan B (Va Tech ROTC - 4 yr Scholarship - School of Engineering) was highly probable. It was a real punch in the gut for DS to be TWE'd again. Thankfully, part of Plan B be has materialized as DS was accepted into the Engineering Program at VT and was also awarded the Emerging Leader Scholarship from the ROTC program. So, it looks like Plan C is a modified Plan B - VT ROTC w/out 4yr scholarship. He plans on reapplying to the academy next year as well as try for a 3yr side load scholarship with the NAVY. His ultimate goal is to fly for the Navy like his Grandfather (F-4 in Vietnam) and his Great Grandfather (B-24 South Pacific WWII)(Great Grandfather lived with us until his passing - DS was 11 - they were close).

I'm posting this for two reasons. The first reason is to share any information regarding the arduous process for both the NROTC scholarship and the Naval Academy application process that would be helpful to anyone on the forum. I have been a silent benefactor of this forum for months as we have navigated our journey and would like to give back to what I feel is a fantastic platform that has been a tremendous help. Right off, one of the biggest takeaways I can share is GET YOUR NROTC SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION IN EARLY (or at least reasonably early). This is especially important to focus on if your applying to a service academy with a backup plan being a ROTC scholarship. I believe this was a mistake my DS made (I take them blame too as his coach). As many on this forum know, the service academy appointment process is lengthy and requires diligence and focus. It is easy to put off Plan B until the end and focus on Plan A like we did. I think this came back to bite us. Because the NROTC scholarship applications can be submitted as early as August (I think) and are awarded on an ongoing or rolling basis, you can find yourself at the back of the line in an even more competitive environment competing for fewer spots if you wait until the deadline to submit. And for those of you who want to know the stats of my DS they are as follows:

GPA: 4.375, SAT: 1240, Class Rank: 4, Dual Credit Courses: 6, AP Courses: 2, Honors Courses: 3, Honors/Awards: Headmasters list (All A's) grades 8-12, Boys State, Congressional Nomination to the Naval Academy, National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, Junior Marshall, Varsity Football Offensive Player of the Year, JV Football MVP, Lettered in Football and Soccer, Leadership Positions Held: Student Cooperative Organization (SCO) President, National Spanish Honor Society President, Student Body Class President, SCO Vice President, Science Club President, SCO Grounds Committee Leader, Chamber of Commerce Student Leadership Institute, Varsity Football Captain, JV Football Captain, JV Soccer Captain, Community Service: Missions Trip to Kentucky, Construct Church Playground, Construct Church Basketball Court, Community Fundraising Event Volunteer, Rise Against Hunger Program, Employment: Operated Full Service Lawn Care Business (Self - Employed) Grades 8-12

The other reason for this post is to hopefully receive any feedback from those of you on this forum that have more experience than our family does in navigating the Naval Academy Re-Application process and/or the 3yr ROTC side load scholarship. I humbly invite anyone to ask questions about our journey as well as correct any assumptions I may have gotten wrong in my above post.

Thanks again to all that contribute to this forum and congratulations to all the DS's and the DD's that were successful in receiving either a service academy appointment or a scholarship this year. Both are quite an honor. And thank you for choosing to serve this great country.

Your DS is eligible to reapply for the 4 year NROTC scholarship as well. He can start the application now, but do not submit it yet. When he reports to his unit, they will likely assist him with completing the application and interview. He will submit it after first semester is completed. This essentially becomes a 3 year scholarship, since it doesn't kick in until the next fall. If he doesn't receive the 4 year scholarship, his unit staff can help him with applying for the 3 year scholarship.

We focused on the ROTC Applications along with the service academies because in comparison, the ROTC Scholarship process was less involved (not having to submit to congressional offices, etc.). My kid received word from ROTC first and then a month later we heard from service academy (not appointed). Now that the we (more like me) had time to get past the disappointment and endless questions about what he could have done better, etc. things are good. The positive outcome...all those AP classes he took and tested in, are going to be able to be counted at Norwich where he finally decided he would attend. At one point, I wondered if maybe I should tell him not to worry about taking those tests as they wouldn't be considered at a service academy for credit but he stuck it out and hopefully now, it will benefit him when it comes time to working out his schedule for this coming year.

@PB4Y-1 One thing that jumps out at me is that his SAT score could stand some improvement. He can retake that and submit the new scores as part of his applications. He might try the ACT as well as some folks do better on it.

Keep in mind that many strong candidates face even more competitive candidates on their slates. Also, although it's not as involved as an academy application, an NROTC scholarship is just as competitive. Finally ProudDad17 is spot on about re-applying for the 4 year scholarship.

DS did not receive a 4 year scholarship but won a 2.5 year side-load. He volunteered every chance he got, participated on the drill team, excelled at his leadership responsibilities, and had excellent PT scores. Most important was his grades. He made the Dean's list each semester with a GPA higher than 3.5. I hope that gives your DS some inkling of what to aim at, but I'm sure it's immediately obvious. Side-load scholarships are competitive as well and are decided by a national board.

Retake the SATs. The scores are on the low side for both the academies and ROTC. Just have him take a similar class schedule as the Plebes and get a high GPA. My son reapplied to USNA and the NROTC scholarship. After earning a 3.9 GPA after his first semester, he received both an appointment and a scholarship. Don't give up! We were in your position last year and now my DS will be heading to USNA in less than 2 months.

@PB4Y-1 One more thing I would add. Do not be surprised if he decides not to re-apply to the academy but instead sticks with NROTC. He will get a great engineering education at VA Tech, and he'll be a member of the Corps of Cadets. It's pretty damned close to an academy experience, and he won't have to repeat a year of college. Just sayin'.

Thanks ProuDad17. This is great advice in that it gives DS an additional scholarship channel. Since the VT Enginieering program is a 5 year program, do you know if he could use it the full 4 years?

@ChoirDude I wish we had taken your approach. I agree with you on the AP classes. Regardless of weather they were beneficial in gaining access to a service academy or a scholarship, the advanced studies and the demand on DS's schedule will better prepare him for the rigors of college. As far as the service academy appointment process, our DS gained a tremendous amount of experience with extensive networking, interviewing and professional correspondence. He has grown tremendously because of the experience. NO REGRETS

@kinnem
Thanks for the encouragement. This will help give him good focus and perspective.

@swimmermama1 That's fantastic! I have been following your posts and am very happy for you and your DS. It's very encouraging to hear his story. Best of luck to your DS this year. I hope he has the time of his life. He's earned it!

Thanks. Now that the sting of the NROTC TWE is wearing off, we are all getting excited about an amazing oportunity at VT. He was also accepted at VMI but realized if he didn't eventually get into the Naval Academy that there were more wings coming out of Tech than VMI for whatever reason.
