R Day

@rugermom - There are a few WP FB pages. There is a FB page for your cadet's class (this is where the WP liaison - Deb Dalton will post official information) and also a Mom's page and a Dad's page. You will find lots of info here including info on area accommodations. If you aren't able to get into the Thayer, there are many, many other options. On the Mom's FB page there is a file that lists our many area hotels, motels, b&bs, etc.

Just got notified by our senator that our DD will be receiving an appointment. Now I’m frantic that we won’t be able to get accommodations? What advice do you have for someone that has never been to West Point?

@DDmom - rest assured that you will find accommodations for Rday. Most stay within a 30 min radius of WP (so that includes NY and northern NJ). There are plenty of places to stay within that parameter. We live 90 min away and we just drove up that day.

And congratulation to your daughter. R day is emotional and exciting but A day is even more emotional and exciting!

We visited this summer and stayed in Peekskill which is only about 10 miles away but takes 25-30 minutes to get there. It involves very winding roads and it was raining. We are staying in Nanuet at the doubletree for R day, and my son is doing an overnight visit this Tuesday so I booked there for that too so I can see how the drive to West Point works. https://secure3.hilton.com/en_US/dt/reservation/book.htm?execution=e1s1 They’ve got availability here so you could book it now and if it turns out to be a drag of a drive I’ll let you know.:)

The Double Tree in Nanuet has large rooms that can sleep up to six if you have a bunch of people going. That has been or go-to hotel over the years.

Free Breakfast, 30 minutes from West Point, No real traffic on the Palisades Parkway, close to restaurants and stores. You will be fine.

@DDmom I wanted to come back and give you one more piece of advice here. The entire process is a marathon and the appointment means you are very close to the end buy you and your DD still has things to accomplish before R-Day.

Do not sweat the small stuff or you will drive yourself crazy. You will get a ton of advice from this forum, an official Facebook class page, more than one Mom's Facebook page (I hear there are 4-5), and maybe even a Dad's page. While they will all contain some good advice, they may also have some extreme opinions. Just take it all in and enjoy the last few weeks with your girl.

Thanks for the great advice! DD has not even gotten the portal update yet!

Fantastic! Thank you!!!

Sorry everyone but I have what is probably a very dumb question. I keep reading about hours long lines getting into Ike Hall on R-Day. Will DS be waiting on this line with us or is there a separate line for those reporting ?

My understanding is that families and Cadets wait together. Go inside, listen to a short speech. Are given 60 or 90 seconds to say goodbye, and the Cadet enters the doors out of sight. The remainder of the day is spent doing various activities until the contingent passes in review on The Plain. Immediately following the review, visitors are expected to depart.

How was the drive from the doubletree for the overnight visit? Still trying to decide what to do.

Our DS was in the first reporting group. He wanted to get there early and we stood in line with him for about 30 minutes. We entered the auditorium, listened to the speaches and then we were given 30 seconds for our goodbye. I had read it would be longer, but for some reason, it was shortened for our year group. It was probably a good thing, as we had already said everything that we wanted to say before we got there. We had enough time for us to hug him tell him he would do great and then he left. Then the tears started to flow........

The drive from the Doubletree was a breeze. After I left DS for his overnight visit, I drove up to check out Fishkill. It was a beautiful drive but the drive from the Doubletree was super easy. DS wanted to be there early to get visitor clearance, so we were up before 5. It didn’t even take us a half hour to get there.

Last year the wait, from getting in line to saying goodbye, was about 2 hours. We were given 60 seconds. It isn’t as bad as you think.

Enjoy the last couple hours with your soon-to-be New Cadet while in line. Keep it light. Engage with others around you and make new friends.

Good Luck! It comes quick.

Thank You.. DS spent this year at MMI so we are used to the goodbyes, this time around will be much easier on his mom. Instead of leaving him in the middle of nowhere (rural Alabama) he will only be a 1-1/2 hour drive away..

So if a parent was going to hedge their bets and book now. Would you need a room July 1st and 2nd for R day and August 17th, 18th and 19th for A day? I am assuming it will be early report on R day so no allowance to come in later in the day? Our household is still in shock a bit that we are so fortunate to know this early.
Arriving earlier on Friday for A Day is ideal if you want to attend the tentative Parents Reception. It is a great way to meet all the parents that you have connected and bonded with over the summer ( if you joined your class page). It is such a different day of emotions from R Day, as I understand it, as we weren't at R Day. Your cadet will be released after the Acceptance Parade on Saturday morning and will have to be back by Taps Sunday morning. They will be released again Sunday morning and will have recall Sunday night. Most will want to be back Sunday late afternoon to get their rooms in order with all the stuff they likely just had you take them shipping for :) as well as already have homework assignments.
Grant Turn around begins to look like a Best Buy parking lot on Black Friday.
I'm arriving with my son on June 30th for Rday is that giving us enough time?
