Dual Majors

If you look in the current USCGA course catalog you do not see any discussion of dual or double majors. I know most students who apply to the academies tend to be type A, high performing students, but I find the benefit of a double major not worth the effort. The current curriculum is more well rounded than a civilian university and future employers understand that. If you get to the academy and academics are just coming that easy to you, then I recommend to get heavily involved in a club or some other activity. But for most students, a double major would just put on more work on an already heavy schedule.

Girl in the class of 2007 double majored.... not sure what in... but it was done....

No thanks!

Most cadets that dual major have to place out of a lot of the offered 4/c year courses (Calc I Calc II, physics) in order to free up their schedule for major specific classes. Dual-majoring is difficult but can be done most that I've seen will do Electrical Engineering and Operations Research because a lot of the classes are the same. Usually there are 2-3 per class that will do it. This was in 2016 though and the catalog of required courses probably has changed.

That sounds like what she did.

What are the options for dual majors at the USCGA?
You sure can double major!! My DS was.. yes was double major in EE n Operations research ( lots of Math). His 3rd semester, he had 25 credits .. had 3hrs if sleep for one semester and on Fridays he had an option to eat dinner or take a nap.. he took a nap if he can. I told him not to declare both but work on completing both of course he didn’t listen. I talk him to drop OR every Friday, that’s when he calls me. He did drop it this semester and told me, “mom, I really wish I listen to you in the beginning, thank you”. Now he is getting 7hrs of sleep n can take 2 naps a week. Still taking 17 or 19 credits but the lowest me ever taken. Remember you have military obligations, has sport, dance/formal, parade, room n uniform inspection, community service n others on top of studying!!!

At least one in the Class of 2017 did. I disremember who, but I do remember being impressed by that at graduation.

Seems like a waste to get a OP Research and EE degree dual major. An EE degree will get you into OP Research post graduate program.
I would think a great dual major would be Government/Foreign Language, but I don't think there is a foreign language major at the CGA.

There is not a foreign language major at CGA, but there is opportunity to take higher level language classes across the street at Conn College, and many Government majors take advantage of this opportunity.

Govt majors, when I was there, had two tracks. The international relations track required Spanish classes. I was a public policy track so no Spanish for me.

Currently there are three Government major tracks: Politics, Policy and Law Concentration, International Relations Concentration, and Security Studies Concentration.

From the current Course Catalog: "All Government majors are required to demonstrate competency in a language other than English at the intermediate level. This is normally done by passing Spanish II or a higher level Spanish course. Cadets who wish to fulfill this requirement in another language through approved Academy exchange programs or through Connecticut College may petition to do so...".

My 2/c had 4 years of French in high school and opted to take a semester of a higher level French at Conn. College to meet the requirement. Other current cadets are opting to study Arabic.
