Didn't scramble incoming class of '21 after BCT; wonder what the odds are this year with a new 'Supe' taking the reins.

Thoughts?

My class didn't scramble at all. Was in the same company for four years with the new cadet platoon I went to beast with. Scrambling is an interesting concept. I have never seen any institutional research supporting it one way or the other and they seem to do it based on some intuitive notion that it would be better to meet more of your class than it would to stay with the ones you bounded with early on. My guess is that changing the policy is a way that someone in the tactical department can get an OER bullet point.

I have lost track of how many times the class of 2018 has scrambled -- after Beast, after Plebe year, (after Yuk year I think?) and before Firstie year. I thought some of these changes happened because of the Commandant at the time (cadet is on his 3rd Comm). Thankfully he has had one Superintendent during his time at WP.

Since many career officers move to new posts every 2-3 years or so I suspected it was an attempt to expose the cadets to this type of 'new unit' transfer.
But who knows.

Lots of reasons for scrambling. Back in the 70's it was initiated (or re-initiated) after a EE cheating scandal where companies were maintaining "study files". However there are many reasons to do it or not do it. Other factors come into play such as construction projects etc. I haven't heard any intel from current cadets.

I know during times of high attrition, they will scramble to right-size each class within the company.

How are the original companies formed at beast? Is there a rhyme or reason to it? DS is AOG from MMI, I would assume that group will be spread out so they aren't too comfortable from the beginning.

Lol....not sure about the rhyme or reason however. .2018 cadet was an AOG from MMI and from his perspective...MMI did an excellent job preparing him for USMA and he has stayed very close to his classmates from MMI. Congrats!

The Comm is a '90 grad and as mentioned earlier; the class that never scrambled. Assume he's not a fan of it? 2019 scrambled after Beast but hasn't since and isn't the coming year. The 2018s seem to have scrambled every 2 weeks! DS was not a fan of 2021's not scrambling after Beast; said they were way to comfortable. So that leaves the 2020's. They haven't scrambled for the academic year yet. But a new Comm for next year may change that. As an opinion, I would think scrambling would benefit the kids in the long term by knowing more people.

@Oldcorps That was your class, right? '78 The Original Cheaters. An Old Grad in the Commissary was wearing a '78 jacket and his wife said, 'The Original Cheaters'--I had to ask for background from my '81.
The '18's are like scrambled eggs. The '16s scrambed before Yuk year.

That was actually 77 - we had to bear the burden of the fallout! Many of the 77's involved were turned back to 78 instead of separation

The previous comm was '90 also and she scrambled the firsties. My son at another academy was just scrambled after 4c year. The cadets don't like it much, but cadet approval is never a priority. I think it is interesting when they say it simulates the service, because that was not my experience at all. As a new LT I was assigned to a battalion which I was in for my entire first tour. I changed jobs within the battalion a few times, but I still worked and socialized with the same cohort of BN LTs for the entire 3 years. Now I understand others may have a different experience based on branch and assignment, but breaking bonds of friendship to simulate a situation that may not even happen does not seem productive.
