I have a DS who will be starting college in the fall. Didn't make it into USAFA and is planning to join AFROTC at his #1 choice. Started the process too late to apply for the AFROTC scholarship.

If a student is a non-select for EA can they still finish college and apply OTS? He is a technical major/cyber operations if that makes any difference.

The first question wouild be why dont you think he will be selected for EA?

I think he will be fine. Actually I think he will excel. Just asking the question.

Yes. Not getting selected for an EA will not affect their future opportunities. Only getting disenrolled for failing to meet standards (GPA below min, fail PFA, etc) or getting disenrolled for medical issues or civil involvements will. Be aware that OTS is MUCH MUCH harder to get selected for than AFROTC Field Training. As a tech major, especially in the cyber field, unless they really, really, suck they will get an EA based on current trends. With that being said, being average is risky being above average and excellent is a good place to be.

I agree that as a tech major chances are your DS will get an EA (especially if in a rated slot). However, I disagree somewhat about not getting selected for an EA not affecting future opportunities. If you don't get an EA, you don't get enrolled in POC, you don't get contracted, and you don't get a commission. You can graduate from college; however, the only other source of AF commission is OTS, and as noted, it is much harder to get selected. So if your DS meets and exceeds the standards, stays in a tech field (rated slot as a pilot, weapons systems officer, drone pilot is a big plus) getting an EA shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for your input. After USAFA non select DS turned down a couple of excellent running scholarships at other schools to be able to attend his #1 choice with both highly rated cyber ops and ROTC detachments. I actually think it is a better fit for him.
