I have received an AFROTC scholarship for Purdue and was all set up and planning to attend, but this morning I found out that I just received a falcon foundation scholarship. My whole intent is to be an officer and I just don't know if I should sacrifice a year where I would be serving. Thanks for any insight.

I turned down an AFROTC scholarship for a Falcon scholarship a few years ago. Not an easy decision, but I'm glad I took the year to prepare for USAFA. It's going to have to be your decision, but I think both are solid paths to commission, it just depends what you want.

Happy to answer questions if you've got them.

Congrats! My DS is going to NWP this year. Both are awesome choices!

Congratulations! You have the luxury and burden of being able to choose. Just think you are either going to decline an AFROTC scholarship or a prep school appointment to USAFA. Step back and really soak that in. :)

We had a DS who rec'd an AROTC scholarship to VMI and a prep spot for USMMA. It was a difficult decision but he has chosen USMMA prep school. We sat down with him and looked at the curriculum of both the prep school/USMMA combo and VMI, the opportunities outside the classroom and the options available after graduation. Since you are looking at AF either way your options at graduation will probably be similar. So you might want to take the time to examine the actual curriculum, ROTC opportunities vs academy opportunities for extra curricular involvement and make sure you visit both campuses to get a feel for the atmosphere. You can't make a wrong choice so all things being equal decide which one you will enjoy most.

10 years from now looking back the extra year you spend in prep school will seem insignificant so from an "old folk" don't let that be your deciding factor. One other item to consider, if your scholarship doesn't include room and board and Purdue doesn't provide that for you there will be a financial consideration that should also weigh in on the decision. Now, provided you have a guaranteed job after graduation (which is HUGE in my opinion) you will either need to pay as you go or have a student loan to pay off when you graduate.
