Hi,
Joel here, I am new to the Forum. I have the honor of working in the 8th Brigade, United States Army Cadet Command as a part of the recruiting team. My Brigade covers Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, California, Alaska, Hawaii, and Guam. If you have a question pertaining to Army ROTC and the opportunities in our area or across the nation, I can probably get you an answer or put you in touch with someone who can.

Regards,

Joel

Welcome, so great to have another person attached to AROTC to answer questions

On a side note, both my sons commissioned through the University of Idaho Battalion, great school and program.

Hi Joel,
I do have a question or two for you. My son is a cadet at Virginia Military Institute completing his second year at VMI and Air Force ROTC. He's considering a transfer from Air Force ROTC to Army ROTC since he is a non tech major (International Studies) and will likely not get a commission with the AF as their focus is on filling tech slots. He has completed the DoDMERB physical, AF testing and physical fitness assessment. We're unclear about the requirements for Army ROTC should he be able to transfer. Would he have to repeat the medical eval and fitness testing? When would he be eligible for basic and advanced camps? Any other info would be appreciated!

His DODMERB should be good, he will have to pass an Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) prior to contracting, he shouldn't need to go to Basic Camp, Advanced Camp will be after his junior year, and he should talk to the ROO at the Army ROTC program ASAP. He should get credit for his AF ROTC experience, so he could potentially contract next fall.

Thanks! This is helpful info. He was training to be an AF special tactics officer so the APFT shouldn't be a problem. He's been advised (by his Dad) to talk to the AROTC ROO as soon as possible.

Cheers Joel, just in time for the new wave to begin; I’m certain you will be helpful

Chrisman Raiders!! Tell them to send us a note sometime to let us know how they're doing!

Welcome Joel, so awesome to add you to the great group of ROO’s on here!

I think your are jumping the gun here. While there is no issue geting info on AFROTC, I think your son should wait until he doesnt get invited to field training. Even with the claims that only 88% are going this year, my son's detactment had 100% of its sophmore group invited. I cant imagine all the are STEM majors, but I cant say they arent either

VMI2020's son has already been notified that he did not receive an EA slot, I think that's why he is seeking the information.

Yes that is correct he did not get an EA slot, nor did several others in the detachment who were non STEM majors. The only non STEM majors that made the cut had a GPA higher than 3.6 and my son fell short.

If My DS does not get in yes i believe so. He was weighing NMMI and even Texas A&M. But we live 10 min from UNT.

If anyone can give me some pointers. My son was filling out one of the ROTC scholarship apps but as soon as he got his nomination it all stopped down and he never finished it. So i know submitting it for freshman year is a wash but if he does ROTC in the fall can he apply for next year? He wanted to do NROTC but UNT only has AF or Army.
