Arotc contracted vs scholarship

Alright all, so I know the difference between the contracted and scholarship. One gets only the stipend and the other gets both.
Here is where I am confused on.
For scholarship, if you leave after the second year you are obligated to pay back or enlist.

Let’s assume one chooses the contract without scholarship route. Say they drop ms3 year. What happens to them? Do they need to pay back the stipend?

I think not, but I won't swear to that. Perhaps one of the ROOs will chime in. Keep in mind that if you leave prior to start of sophomore year, while on scholarship, there is no payback required. The first year is on them.

While I have not yet had to go through disenrollment with a non-scholarship cadet, for scholarship cadets the stipend is not paid back, with the exception of any stipend payments made erroneously after the cadet has already broken their contract. While I cannot guarantee the same is true for non-scholarship cadets, I believe it is. Can anyone else confirm?

If you are a scholarship cadet you would be obligated to the Army after your first year.

A 4 year scholarship cadet can drop the program after their first year, as long as they drop before the start of their sophomore year, they would not owe anything back to the Army.

If the cadet is a 3 year scholarship cadet they would be obligated once they contract at the start of their sophomore year.

The contract DA 597 (non-scholarship) from 2005, does NOT indicate stipend payback for dis-enrollment. It does however, indicate an obligation can be incurred for service as enlisted active duty, OR IRR, and cannot enlist in another service branch. (see page 4 "Terms of dis-enrollment).

At least for AF Rotc, you get stipend junior and senior year regardless if you are on scholarship or not. I think once you contract you get it

That's true for all the services. One cannot proceed beyond the second year without receiving advanced standing and contracting.

Kinnem is correct.

In Army ROTC, a cadet cannot move from the Basic Program to the Advanced Program (MS-III) without being awarded a DA 597 contract which then awards them the monthly stipend. If they don't contract, they are no longer in the AROTC program.
