Defer AFROTC Scholarship for One Year?

Here is my situation: I was awarded a four-year Army ROTC scholarship and am all squared away to attend Baylor University in the fall... BUT I have not yet been medically cleared through DODMERB. I am expecting to be cleared (they are only reviewing a laparoscopic appendectomy I had in February - no issues), but I want to have options in case all goes wrong. I also received a four-year Type 7 AFROTC scholarship (they have already cleared all of my medical stuff), which I would be interested in taking advantage of if the Army scholarship falls through. Unfortunately, I have not yet applied to any schools that I would be interested in using my AFROTC on (financial reasons). I have until the 31st of this month to upload a decision letter, and I'm concerned that in so short a time, I may not be able to send my transcripts and SAT scores, receive a decision, and be able to upload it to the Wings website. Soooo... at this point, I'm most interested in deferring my scholarship (if possible) for a year. Does anyone know how I might go about doing this/requesting to do this? Again, this is all assuming the worst case scenario (my not receiving a waiver from the ARMY, which I've heard is rare if the Air Force has already granted the waiver), but I just don't want to put all my eggs in one basket. Thanks in advance!

As far as I know a scholarship for any ROTC program cannot be deferred. You would need to re-apply but I can't say I'm an expert on that. You could try contacting your local AFROTC Admissions Rep to confirm my understanding.

If AF cleared you it's highly likely that Army will clear you. Of course there are never any guarantees.

n the meantime, if you haven't already accepted both scholarships, do so. It buys you some time to sort this all out, although I don't see any way you could use your AFROTC scholarship at this point. I don't mean to be rude, but not applying to somewhere you could use a type 7 scholarship was not good planning on your part. One always needs viable backup plans for any situation.

EDIT: Learn from this.
Also, can you not convert it to a type 2 and still afford other schools with an AFROTC unit, where you were accepted.

Thanks for your input. I spent a lot of time on the phone today. I called multiple detachments and had an old (unfinished) application to the University of Portland expedited. I was accepted officially today and got a nice scholarship from the school which will help pay whatever difference I would owe. Also, room and board is covered for all four years. Not a bad backup plan, I suppose ;). All of my family has gone Army, but they half-joke that the Air Force is the better route to take if one gets the chance.
