NMMI Preparatory School

There was a 24 year old Chief Mate on one of my ships
I find this a highly dubious statement. Was this an unlimited tonnage vessel?

The sea time requirements alone just to be eligible to take the test for a C/M license make this virtually impossible even if you started on your 18th birthday.

Yep, 40,000+ Gross tons.
That makes it even more difficult to believe.

A hawespiper can begin at 18 but you need 1080 sea days just to get a 3rd, and then another 360 to upgrade to 2nd and another 360 to even sit for a C/M exam. That is 6 years of sailing almost literally every single day just to be able to take the test.

Or 4 years at an academy to get a 3rd, then the same 720 before you can take the C/M exam which is 2 years of sailing almost literally every single day just to be able to take the test.

I simply do not believe there are any 24 year old C/M on US flag unlimited tonnage vessel.

I think he maybe finished school early and then sailed almost every day. Unless this guy straight up lied about his age to everyone, which I don't see the reason for then there is at least one.

What? Somebody lies on a ship? Hehehe, I remember sailing with a tankerman who was a year younger that I was. . . and he was talking about his time in 'Nam. . . .yeah, that happened. . . .

Lessen no. 1 for when you go to sea ... Don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see.

I know of a few. I probably won't have a C/M job, but I'll have the ticket in my hand before I turn 25. I've got a few friends earning time and a half that are already there.

As far as the original question in this thread. If you're a SPONSORED prepster... it is a no brainer, go to NMMI. I like @MMA19kid s suggestion if you aren't sponsored, but if Uncle Sam is paying for it KP is the way to go.

Union? Were they A book and could you even get that job as an applicant? It can take 5-10 years until you get enough seniority to be able to get the good jobs. You can sail 9 months as an applicant and not make 100k.

Are you a MEBA engineer? The seniority isn't as a big a deal with AMO, and even with the bottom tier AMO wages you should be able to come pretty close to 100k with 6 months worked... I did even as an applicant.

My DS was offered and accepted NMMI Prep School.
He will not be 18 until over the summer so I am thrilled with this decision. He is too.
He said he is going to work on getting bigger..faster,stronger..and smarter for USMMA.. and football..

Now the family joke is the real test USMMA is putting him through is taking a boy from the mountains of PA and putting in Roswell NM for a year. Where it is 101 by noon.
Kidding aside very happy and excited.

Well teamkidd your DS will do great! You won't believe this but my wife and I just left Wisconsin yesterday afternoon to pick up DD who just finished her year there! It helped her immensely and really prepared her mindset for whats ahead at KP. Everybody said you won't believe how fast a year goes, we are 50 miles from Roswell with 1230 behind us!

I attended NMMI last year as a prep, and I am currently a Midshipman at USMMA. It is a great school to build your academic base in the core classes like English, Physics, Calc, and Chem. The best thing about NMMI is the teachers truly care about you. They are always available when you are struggling, however you have to seek help from them. I would highly recommend your DS LEARNS everything in these core classes during his prep year. Because once he gets to USMMA, everything will be shoveled down your throat. The pace at USMMA is significantly faster as it runs on trimesters not semesters, and the teachers are not as forgiving as NMMI. Therefore, make the most of it! Dont look at it as a year lost, but a year of gains.

The teachers at USMMA are plenty forgiving if you put in the effort. I think the freshman year subjects are probably pretty watered down compared to most colleges.

@MMA19kid - Just curious why you stayed at USMMA? You obviously don't have anything good to say about the school. If you are just trolling for comments and like creating controversy than you need to be ignored. If you are truly that unhappy about your choice of educational institution than, as a parent, I would suggest you move on to someplace else.

The freshman classes at USMMA are definitely not watered down. As a STEM major myself (now with a doctorate) and two kids who have attended KP, I am very familiar with the curriculum, including reading most of their books and meeting most of their teachers. I have been a professor at 4 colleges (2 public, 2 private) and I know what a challenging curriculum is. KP has a challenging curriculum. So yes, once again I vehemently disagree with MMA19KID. There, trolling successful.

Team, I would like to keep this as positive as possible... I really value and enjoy the different view points and perspectives that the whole forum brings. MMA19's viewpoint and input is so important as he is going through this challenging experience right now. This is a huge life changing decision our sons and daughters are going to make and the more information we can get will help them.

Thanks to all who give their input, it really does help!
