How do people afford self-prep?

Like @AROTC-dad ’s DS, I went straight to college after not being accepted to USAFA. Although I had heard of the prep schools, I never considered them because I’d received an AFROTC scholarship and meant to commission by whatever means available (USAFA was not the be all and end all). If I’d received a falcon scholarship, I’m not sure what I’d have done, but I didn’t. I reapplied to USAFA and received an AFROTC nom and two congressional nominations but still no appointment. Commissioned out of AFROTC in 2016, and I’m the same rank as everyone who commissioned our of USAFA in 2016. Doesn’t really matter your commissioning source, and I’m enjoying AD life! I don’t think prep school would have been worth it for me. I didn’t need an extra year before college, already had a 1400 (M+V) SAT and the academics weren’t holding me up (4.0 GPA in engineering when I reapplied). So while it may be a great option for those who need an academic boost, it’s not for everyone.

That's really awesome to hear!

After visiting campus, my DS feels very strongly that he would really prefer college life at a SA- he's really really not into all of the other typical campus life things that a lot of colleges/universities have. Not that it's a bad thing, that's just who my kid is, he craves the structure of a military inclusive offering. (I am not sure where this hippie mama ended up with this kiddo, lol)
One thing my DS was surprised about at MMI was that it’s not as structured as he expected.

MMI and NMMI (and maybe others) are junior colleges that offer college credit classes. If not successful getting into SA than the year isn't wasted and can be transferred or can complete associate degree.

Update: DS applied to MMI the day after the USAFA TWE (harder on mom than on DS.) On 5/4 DS was offered a full-ride to MMI, owing to his grades (4.0 non weighted,) leadership and musical background (HS band and community symphony.)

We are beside ourselves with excitement- and a big serving of pride.

Congratulations to your DS! Very happy for you and can understand your excitement. Your DS and my DD sound like they have a lot in common (high achievers academically, leadership, and musical background). She too has been accepted into MMI (SAP program) with a very generous scholarship. She had scholarship offers to in state schools but prefers the military structure that MMI offers. We just submitted the room deposit last week to hold her spot.

I am calling to discuss the details tomorrow- my phone was on the fritz so I didn't get to talk to the gal at MMI, I'm sure I'll be making the room deposit tomorrow as well!

I looked at their FB on Friday- they had 100 kids in SAP last year and 91 went in to a SA- so I feel pretty confident our babies will be enjoying their appointments in about 11 months! With such a small class, I am sure our kids will meet- so exciting!

That’s great! DS just arrived home from his year in Marion. If you have any questions feel free to ask!

Yeah, we're gonna slap him on the bum and put him on a plane and say "Good luck! See you at Christmas!" ;)[/QUOTE]

Haha!:biglaugh: You guys must live rather far away if he will need to fly in. We live a little over 3 hours away so I'm driving over with DD this Friday to take a tour and look around.

We are 10 hours away, I plan on driving her there I want to see where she's going to be. Everyone I have spoke to has been so nice and helpful, I really just have a good feeling about it. Still so many unknowns but I really like that it seems like they are a very supportive staff.

I agree the Ladies at MMI have been super helpful. My DS has been provisionally accepted to NMMI and we are waiting on MMI--just applied last week. If he can get scholarship money and possibly play baseball he will jump at MMI i think. He would love to play baal and i would love the $ savings. If all else fails he's enrolled to North Texas.
