After a very definitive TWE in April, who would have thought an appointment would happen? So what to do about the university commitment, deposit, housing deposit and non- refundable airfare for summer plans and tickets for events bought because we thought the "fat lady" had sung? Ouch! That's a lot of dough. :(

Not as much as four years of tuition, room, and board ;)

Call the university. Some are very understanding and happy to refund deposit....others not so much. Worth a try.

Also, some airlines will give a voucher for future use even with a nonrefundable ticket. Delta did for me when I had to cancel a flight last year.

Congratulations.

When you talk to the airline, ask for a supervisor right off the bat. Sometimes, they'll gladly refund your money (or give you a voucher for your DS/DD) when they hear about the reason for the change. But don't mess around with the person who answers the phone.

You probably won’t get the main deposit back but my DD called the bursars office and requested a refund for her housing deposit saying she didn’t need housing after all and they refunded the whole amount. Worth a try.

If you choose to accept the Appointment (congrats by the way), you might consider keeping this school as a "backup" just in case something happens along the way. We had a school as a backup just in case our Basic was injured before BCT /during BCT (which has happened in rare cases), or in the case of them deciding is wasn't for them. The school they had as a backup didn't start until Sept so it was little easier. After BCT, they emailed the schools (we have two Cadets) and they refunded all of the money except for a small amount. In fact, they told them congrats for attended USAFA. Just another thought.........

Good idea, a close friend of our DS got a concussion during BCT , and had to leave. He is coming back with the Class of 2022, but yes, it’s still a little ways to go until the official starting line ! Congratulations on the appointment!

Before keeping the school as a backup make sure you are well-informed about the risks/rewards of doing this and how to avoid unpleasant surprises. Many threads on the subject.

Thank you to everyone for your good wishes and great advice! In keeping with my "know nothing" status, I am posting a new question, please weigh in.
