I will be entering with the class of 2022 and report in on June 28th. I understand BCT and the strenuous school year that is to come, but if there are weekends on occasion that I would like to plan in advance to leave the campus for the weekend (Fri-Sun) how would I go about doing that? What is that process like?

So there are some weekends that are designated as "silver weekends," and this means that training occurs on these weekends. Unless you have some sort of "once in a lifetime event," such as a wedding, you will not be permitted to leave until probably Saturday afternoon at the earliest (once all training is over). There are usually one or two silver weekends per month.

Other weekends are blue weekends, which means they are free. As a freshman you will be allowed limited passes per month to leave base. Additionally, as a freshman, there is a chance you may be restricted to base depending on your squadron's performance. There is paperwork you can fill out to ensure you can leave base on a specific blue weekend even if you are restricted, but this must be prearranged and there must be a reason (concert, parents in town, etc). However, you will most likely still have to stay within your pass allotment even with paperwork.

Paperwork in either case can be started once basic ends and it's not that difficult to fill out. Plenty of time to worry about that after basic.

Typically think about federal holidays. Columbus day in October is usually a three day weekend that you could take a pass.

It all depends on how generous passes are given to Doolies. Our DS (Class of 2019) as a Doolie seemed like they were gone every non-duty weekend. They were renting homes out in the "sticks" to get away while our DD (Class of 2021) as a Doolie passes were extremely difficult to come by. You will hear over and over "it all depends". Columbus Day weekend could be a good 3 day weekend, except last year USAFA didn't recognize the Federal Holiday (they had classes) and this year there is a home football game (vs. Navy). So again - it all depends......
