I just got notified that I received a 4 year Army ROTC Scholarship to Morgan State University and Hampton University. The award notification is just online, do I receive anything in the mail? Also how do they get the big checks to present your scholarship? Is that through the school, recruiting office, or what?

Good questions. In addition to online, I think that my DS may have received a letter via email or snail-mail. After accepting the scholarship, we contacted the Chief Master Sargent who is the senior enlisted person for our recruiting district. He was more than happy to come to our local high school's scholarship night and present a massive check for $230,000. There were lots of "ooohs" and "aaahs" when it was presented in front of around 500 people. Also, a photo of our family standing around the check made it into our local paper. This was a good night.

Congrats! And thank you for being willing to serve

Recommend you decide which college you plan to use your scholarship, then contact both your High School Guidance counselor and/or Asst Principal (or who ever is in charge of the awards night ceremony or awards acknowledged at graduation) to let them know you received this scholarship and which college you've chosen.

Recommend you also contact the AROTC ROO at that college you've chosen to let them know you've decided to use your scholarship there and ask them about a presentation at your high school awards night. If the college is close to your High School they may do it. If not they may arrange a local AROTC unit to make the presentation.

Best wishes!

You were just now notified you received a 4 year national scholarship? Or you were just now notified that your 3 year national scholarship you already knew about was upgraded to 4 year?

My son was presented with his "big check" (NROTC) last night by a representative from the local recruiting office. Unfortunately, the individual that was sent did not appear to be well versed in this process. He read something that I could have pulled via a Google search. I feel like he missed an opportunity to really show what the ROTC scholarship process is all about and what an amazing opportunity it is. Our school's NJROTC Faculty was extremely disappointed. But in the end...first world problems really. The boy worked hard, went through the various processes and was found worthy of the award and we count our blessings.
