Starting my senior year in August, so I'm applying this summer, and I wanted some opinions on my chances of acceptance. Thanks.

Academics:
GPA: 3.4 (Unweighted)
3.71 (Weighted)
ACT: 27 Composite

Extracurricular:
JROTC: Freshmen - Senior year
Squad leader, platoon commander, company commander, team commander
Part of nationally ranked academic and PT team Sophomore and Junior years
3rd in the nation, 1st regionally
273 hours of community service
Nevada Boy's State (American Legion) Program

Reccomendations (I don't know if these count for much):
Coast Guard Commander and professional attorney (served 20+ years)

Your academics look about right. JROTC participation and leadership look good. Boy's State is good.
Athletics is missing. I don't know what a "nationally ranked academci and PT team" is . . . perhaps that is a good substitute

Agree with the reply by Falcon A. Participation in athletics is a very important component of the admissions criteria and very much a part of cadet life, however your other ECs are excellent. Be sure to write the essay and be sure to go for an admissions interview.

Schedule an interview with one of the local Alumni reps- ( look on line at the VMI website to find contact information)- that will help some as will going to one of the overnight visits both of which will demonstrate real interest in VMI - and will help you understand life at VMI.

Thanks for the info, that helps a lot.
My JROTC team placed 3rd in the nation out of all program, that's why I say nationally ranked. It isn't necessarily a conventional athletic team, however. Push ups, it ups, and runs. I have a varsity letter from it though.

I'd say your chances are quite good - there is a even better school a few hundred miles south in Charleston ....

My advice is to retake the ACT - does your school have an XC team that might be a help though sports like XC, Track, Swimming seem to be viewed at second tier for some reason .
