CGAS waitlist

My son received this email an hour ago, subject heading, "CGAS Waitlist":

Good morning!
We are finally at a point where we can select students from the waitlist into the CGAS class. I am contacting the waitlist students to remind them of a few things to keep in mind in the following weeks:

· The waitlist is not ranked.

· I will notify you with a phone call if you are selected, and your status will also change in your Bears Den account.

· We will continue to pick/review applicants from the waitlist up until July 1st.

· Once the waitlist is closed, you will be notified via email.

· Please set yourself up for success and coordinate your Plan B - CGAS should not be your only option at this point.

Please let me know if you have any further questions. Thank you for your continued patience.
Who sent this to your son? We have not received similar. :(
Maybe they get sent out at different times? It was from LT Rivera.

DS graduates this week from USCGA with his diploma, his commission & his USCG Master Mariner credentials. The academy started this program in 2014, I believe.
A USCG <100 Tons Near Coastal and an USCG Unlimited Tonnage Master Oceans that a cruise ship captain has are two very different animals in terms of time and required training.

The original discussion involved unlimited third class mate NOT unlimited master.

Ok I'll rephrase based on the original post, near coastal master won't get you a deck officer job with Carnival.

Plus it is the only Academy you actually end up with a working unlimited 3rd mate License to work on a ship. You can read many online stories of 30 year plus USN Captains with 2-3 Ship commands that can't get hired by Carnival Cruise lines because they do not have a USCG Mariner License.

I'm going to go out on a limb, and venture to guess that a USN Captain with 30+ years of experience could find a better retirement job than commanding a Cruise ship. Now lets revisit that "six pack" license, that's a more enjoyable retirement job after spending 30+ years on the USS Neverdock. Throw in a little part time consulting work for some real dough.

His point was simply no matter how much govt sea time you have, if you don't have the right documents you are unemployable as a commercial mariner.

My point is that if someone wants to be a commercial mariner, they wouldn't be busting their hump in the UNA/CGA. They'd go to MMA.

The I suspect you would be surprised at how many ex Navy or Coasties I encounter in the commercial maritime world....

As Deck Officers/Captains or in some kind of consulting role? Are these ex's SA graduates? Your point before was that they didn't have the skill set to do commercial sailing.

My point was not that they didn't have the skill set, it was that if you don't have the appropriate license for commercial sailing, all the skills in the world do not matter for a commercial sailing job. Not sure why you are so triggered by this concept. I'm sure you're a great driver. If you don't have a CDL, you can be hired to drive a commercial vehicle.

KP...I'm agreeing with you Captain Quint...just messing with you a little. My original point was that the CGA grad's have a very limited license that pretty much let's them captain a fishing guide boat. Their mission is different and if they'd like to test for unlimited tonnage....I'm sure they could if that's one of their goals. I respect those who attend or have graduated KP, its a great school !!!!

Shouldn't this fascinating "discussion" take place in an off topic area somewhere? If the goal is to be a commercial sailor, the CGA probably isn't the best place to go about pursuing it, which is why there are zero discussions in the CGA forum about how to do it. You are arguing with yourself about an issue no one here cares about, and hijacked a thread for kids on the CGAS waitlist who are hoping for a change in status.

Slow day on the KP side of the forum?

Korab, I understand the situation you are in, my DS was on the wait list for the CGA at one time. Nothing you read here is going to change anyone's situation.

Keeping my fingers crossed and prayers up for all of you from the 808. We are from Hawaii too!!
okay...this coming week will be da week. My husband spoke with Asst. Admissions Director and said only 4 slots open, not much on waitlist, meeting on Tuesday and by Friday we all should hear. Prayers to everyone

So you are saying that only 4 people will be offered spots off the CGAS waitlist? Any idea how many confirmed their desire to stay on the waitlist?

Just correcting misinformation where I see it. Same as the replies about compensation on this thread.....

My kid was admitted back in December. I said what I said for the benefit of the kids and their families hanging on for one last chance.
Whether or not you feel they are entitled to that respect, general rules of internet forums denounce thread hijacking.

Still no word on CGAS waitlist appts? Figured someone on the forum would hear something.
