Plebe Family Weekend - Seeking info

Just trying to find a little more detail about the structure of this family weekend. I see online that it runs August 9 through August 12, but I've heard elsewhere that the plebes can stay off site with family for one or two nights. Is that true? How many nights? Can the plebe stay with a family friend, not a family member? Does it matter much of the housing is super close to Navy? Any other info to share?

Plebes have historically NOT been permitted overnights during Plebe Parents' WE and there is no reason to think this will change this year. They do have extensive liberty starting Friday around noon. They usually have to be back at USNA around midnight (might be 10 pm) Friday and Saturday and 6 pm on Sunday but have the entire day (other than the occasional parade, etc.) to spend with their families and friends.

If you can afford to stay at a downtown Annapolis hotel, it makes life simpler b/c -- worst case -- your plebe can walk back to USNA. However, many families stay in area hotels that are driving distance and just allow more time to get back to USNA each night.

If you search this forum under "PPW" or "Plebe Parents' Weekend," you'll find lots of good info.

Typically, no, they cannot stay off the yard overnight. My 2020 Mid was released after noon formation on Friday and had to return by 2200. Mids can leave the yard Saturday after the formal parade... and have to be back by midnight. He was able to leave the yard again Sunday morning at 0800, and had to be back by 1800. This could change, but has been somewhat "standard" recently.

Thanks so much for the info! I don't know where I had read about the overnight stays. Kinda a bummer but on the up side, could make the housing for us less expensive!

Different question - do fall sports teams practice over this weekend? And if they practice, are those practices closed or do family, etc ever watch any portion? Maybe there'd even be an open scrimmage?

The last couple of years, the football team has a practice (open scrimmage) at the stadium that PPW Saturday. However, if memory serves, the practice would conflict with the formal parade. You'll want to see your plebe in the parade. Plebes are then released for the day immediately following the parade. That's when he/she will want to get away from the yard for non King Hall food/long showers/sleep. Can't speak for any other sports team practices.

The coaches do the best they can to work with the schedule to maximize the liberty for fall sports. They know what Parent’s Weekend means. They also know what a break and nap will do to help out their newest team members will do for them. As to whether it will be an open practice, not sure. If I had to speculate, probably. Be surprised if they did the parade and instead had practice too. Good question to ask the coaches the day before I Day. Most teams host a meet and greet the day before I Day and let the new Plebes drop off sports gear as needed and let them meet their new team mates (and provide reassurance to nervous Plebe to be and parents).

This jogged my memory - one of our neighbors is a USNA varsity coach, and he always has a bbq at his house for plebe recruits and families that weekend. All the coaches come, Officer Rep and team faculty advisor come.

For plebe parents weekend my DS wanted to chill in the hotel room and have some computer time then eat burgers then see a movie.
Then to his horror, 2 of his detailers walked into the movie and sat right behind us, but they were totally cool. Good thing his uniform was in good standard.
One more hint- get them back in plenty of time. We got there about an hour early and parked at the mid store and listened to music and talked till he had to leave. When I was driving out about 5 minutes till the be back time, there was a massive traffic jam outside the gate and plebes were running for it to make it back to mother b

Agree 100%. This is especially true for those of you staying in hotels/homes outside of downtown Annapolis. Those quaint little roads that seemed so empty when you last visited become virtual parking lots when ~1000 cars are trying to get to the same 2 gates via the same 2 streets at the same exact time.

Traffic is a nightmare when they have to report back. Have seen them bailing out and running for Gate 1. DD had a coronary when detailer and parents came to the same place at dinner and came over to say hello.
