I was at USCGA on business yesterday, and despite the rain, enjoyed seeing happy families with their smiling firsties out and about. Best wishes for every success to the newest sea service officers! Everyone is happy - RADM Rendon was happy, out and about at various events, staff and faculty were busy (VP advance detail everywhere) but smiling. Great vibe there.

Right now I am at the USNA Blue Angels show in Annapolis. The “high” show - no cloud cover. Time to stop squinting at my iPhone and concentrate on feeling my bones vibrate to the sound of freedom during low altitude passes.

Love The Blues!
It isn't going to be the same when they trade in the Hornets for Raptors.
F-22s are so quiet, compared to F-18s.

I've lived on or just outside the fence of three NAS and now live a couple miles from Quantico and now watch the presidential white tops and Ospreys. Locals who complain of freedom noise baffles me. Especially the ones who moved in long after the base was established. I was the medical planner for a Blue Angels show at NAS Oceana once and got to ride around in a golf cart carrying a Motorola and acting like a big wig for three afternoons. I miss those days.

But did you score a Blues shirt or ball cap???

No Blues gear. Not as big of a wig as I remember I guess.

Blue Angels story on WJLA just now. The squadron had to trade slick Hornet #1 with jet #7 due to mechanical problems. They were only 30 minutes late for the start of practice. A big thrill for those walking the Yard.

Happens more than most people know. You should see a practice day when they move jets around and won’t change the numbers. I have 3 of 6 jets with the wrong number in a practice and it’s a real brain tease. Really confused people who didn’t understand what happened. For a show vice practice they will change the numbers. They try not have a 2 seater for a solo, unless they have someone flying with them, but it does happen. If it’s a long road trip (when they go out west they can be gone for 4 weeks or more sometimes) they fly an 8th jet out there. They have 3 spares beyond the 6 that fly in the show and #7 the narrator uses for VIP and guest flights. The ground crews do an absolutely amazing job keeping those things flying. And those guys and gals work some crazy long hours.

Um hmm, in the mid-90s Joan Lunden ?sp showed up with GMA crew for a back seat ride with the Blues. I was the LCPO of the physiology unit and made arrangements for training from the APTs and an up chit from a flight surgeon. The day she rolled up the base Co, hospital CO, and every cat and dog between Cecil and Jax were in the clinic. I was embarrassed for them but she plowed through the crowd, got cleared, and went for a ride. I'm sure she had seen that type of clown show before.

Lots of smiles that week.
