I am rewriting my congressional nomination short essay. It asks "why do you want to attend a service academy ." Should I make a general statement or should my response be focused on my top pick (USMA)?
 
Considering the question asks why you want to attend a service academy, and not why you want to attend USMA, you should write it from the general stance of why you want to attend a service academy and serve your country.

Write it from the general SA perspective, and in other questions or in your interview, explain your choice preference and reasoning for such.
 
Depends. If USMA is your top pick but you’re open to receiving a nomination to the others, then write a general statement. If USMA is your only pick, or the others are a very distant second, then write specifically about USMA. Give yourself the best chance to get a nomination, whether you have a clear top choice or are indifferent to which one you attend.
