What are the plebe summer meals like in terms of amount? Are you able to eat a lot of food throughout the summer?

Yes they give you more then enough food. You have your traditional breakfast, lunch and dinner. I️m in the class of ‘21 and they fed me so much I️ actually gained 10 lbs over plebe summer.

Awesome, I’m trying to avoid losing any

They actually weigh you weekly, or every few weeks , during Plebe Summer, to make sure you don't lose to much weight.

I recall my Squad Leader toward the end of Plebe Summer, asking why I had lost so much weight during the Summer, and my reply was that I hadn't had a beer in 6 weeks ! (Times have changed.... 18 was legal then -- not recommended response anymore !)

Hahahaha...the good old days. I lost about 20 during Beast

My Plebe appears to be convinced that if he has to eat like a civilized person (the whole straight out, straight back in, bite, set down, chew, put hands in lap, repeat thing - while also answering questions) that he won't be able to get enough to eat during Plebe Summer.

There's a first-world problem for ya. :)

They eat plenty. Part of a detailers job is to ensure they are getting enough to eat and drink. They want them to succeed and perform well. I lost over 25 lbs my summer. I was a rail. They have changed slightly how meals are done to prevent this kind of stuff. Some kids gain and others lose Plebe Summer. They also get calories from the Gatorade at meals and the boxes people send they eat at night.

I always assumed they survived on MREs. What do I know? DS lived on MREs during NROTC orientation.

MREs are sustainable for a period of time, but in this type of enivornment not a good option. They are actually expensive, meals are a huge training time during Plebe Summer and taking 1200+ kids over 6 weeks from all over the world and eating MREs non-stop... the nightmare their bodies will go thru. I have lived off MREs in the field for a long period of time and I usually ate 1 per day. It’s the most that most our bodies could even take.

I must admit that I like the crackers and the strange peanut butter and the jalapeno cheese.
The poppy seed pound cake is pretty good, too.

I remember one of my Boy Scout leaders giving us C-rations... MRE's were a delicacy compared to C rats.

If you're a parent, you'll invariably find your DS/DD complaining about King Hall food. Some of the complaining is probably legit -- it's not mom/dad's home cooking and it's not gourmet restaurant food -- and is food served to around 1500 people at the same time. However, it is decent and most of the complaining comes from the fact that, especially during PS, plebes have no alternatives. In that regard, the menus get monotonous and there isn't the option to rifle through one's pantry or refrigertor. That's why, during PPW, plebes want to eat anywhere other than King Hall. During Ac Year, it's not quite as "bad" b/c plebes can walk out in town on the WEs, have access to Dahlgren, can go to their sponsors, get junk food at football games, etc.

> Hint, monotonous menus are a good thing when, as a Plebe, you have to memorize the menu for the next meal ! I can still recite the Mexican meal menu !

Perhaps its a testament to the Food Services Officer and King Hall staff at the time, but I really don't have any lasting recollection of the food being bad, or particularly good for that matter. It was plentiful (I know others have commented here that there was a time when the budget was so tight that feeding the Mids was an issue), and anything that wasn't good got covered in Tabasco sauce. You also learn to eat fast -- as a Plebe you want to get away from the table as soon as they will let you; and as an upperclass, you have plenty of other things to be doing.

Our 17 stayed at the same weight all summer. He gained 15 of muscle during the year. Joked about the freshman 15. He then lost 20 during the month where he completed the SEAL screener and ran the Marine Corps marathon. He’s in flight school now and has put on 10 pounds of muscle after losing some weight at TBS.

Our 20 lost 13 during Plebe summer. Not really sure why but he’s got it all back plus some and is entering 3rd year.

PS food, according to our Mids is better than the ACademic year. They don’t love King Hall food, but it gets the job done. They order out as well.

The great thing is that our Mids are very much part of the fitness culture at USNA. I tried to get ice cream at King Hall during 2/c parents weekend, and my 17 wouldn’t let me “embarrass” him. No problem with it in DTA.

Ah, that's sad. In the old days, when USNA had it's own dairy farm, ice cream was the highlight of the meal.

I've worked with a number of USNA grads and whenever we went out to eat, I'd be three bites in and their plates would be CLEAN. The food seemingly vanished in seconds!!

I had lunch out today with USNA grad DH and USNA sponsor daughters from ‘98 and ‘14 today. I was not at halfway before they were done, AND they were comparing plebe summers. Both women are AD, so fast eating skills have been kept current during deployments.

I think complaining about the dorm food, no matter what school you are at and how good/bad the food might be, is a given. I believe the Greeks started the tradition on their Socratic lunch breaks.
